As far as what percentage of the population has access to these things, I have no idea. But in a big city, they are certainly common enough.

But I've just found out that a good number of them probably use knockoff iPhones as my dad just bought one for RMB800. It looked totally like the real deal, everything from the design to the interface.

It couldn't go online at all, and the "apps" were just simple ones that came with the phone (calculator, clock, etc.), but supposedly it worked fine as a phone. I'll have to ask him about that...

Also I cannot recommend to buy the 'real' iPhone being now sold in China, since it doesn't have the Wi-Fi function (if an iPhone doesn't get Wi-Fi, can it be 'real'?).
