Remember Me

Upper Intermediate - Badminton

Discussion

It's a bird... it's a plane... no. It's the biggest thing to hit China since ping pong. Meet another sport beloved by the Chinese. In this podcast, listen in to a badminton game as it was meant to be played... in Mandarin. Next time you hit the court, you'll be able to smash that birdie with the best of 'em.

I think the music was a video game-esque sound effect marking the great shot.

Oh, thanks, Amber...I don't play arcade games so I guess it's my ignorance.

In the explanation, Jenny seems to pronounce 喏 as 'nao2', but the PDF transcript has it as 'nuo4'. Is it just my ears or my ignorance again?

In China my co-workers all play badminton every wed night for physical fitness. They play indoors in a gym with no air conditioning. They believe you shoud sweat, because it is healthy. At least that was the explanation. There are no showers either. A little different than here where badminton is only played at picnics outdoors and not taken very seriously. At least that has been my experience. I had to teach them what a "birdie" was but they are very good at the game. A good idea actually for staying in shape. Thanks for the lesson. I can use the vocab.

I remember in the Philippines around 4 years ago there was this badminton explosion, suddenly Badminton courts appeared everywhere, and everyone was playing it!

rjberki,

i'm not sure what you mean by "here", but in Canada we actually take badminton pretty seriously. though many people haven't even heard of it, most people who have are quite good. of course, half of them are overseas chinese.

but like in america, we still consider pingpong an activity, not a sport.

loved the lesson, except the crazy music lol. . i didn't really get that.

Well I was pleased to hear that "in Canada we actually take badminton pretty seriously"!! and that badminton is only played a picnics outdoors!

In some parts of the world, it is regarded as a major sport; not only in China.  It was as far as I know invented in England (like many sports).

In my humble opinion it is the most skilfull and demanding racquet sport.  I believe it the fastest (a split second to retrieve the shot) and it is the subtlest with deception playing a large part with variety of shot in all three spatial dimensions, not only width, and length but also height.

On a different note, this has to be shortest ever dialogue for an upper intermediate.  Dumbing down has reached new depths.

Here in Northen California, a lot of high schools have serious badminton teams, maybe because of the large Chinese and Vietnamese populations, I'm not sure.  I have a Vietnamese coworker who supposedly was a fearsome badminton player in high school.

I'll definitely use the vocabulary when playing with my chinese friends next time :-)

Here in Europe many people also think badminton is not a real sport, just some recreational activity to be played in a park. In that case watch this:

Badminton is actually the fastest ball game, just watch this 305 km/h smash:

Well, I have to admit, if I had ever played serious badminton on a team with uniforms, I would have never had a girlfriend... it's just not considered a man's game here (or a girls game, actually)...

But all of that aside, it is really really fun, and I enjoy it for the laughs and social aspect. ;)

 你好Chees

你把·接球·翻译为"return a shot" 我觉得应该翻译为"receive a shot (serve)"......

hi markc,

In Chinese, it's kind of one and the same action, the use the same word to mean both receive and return a shot.

Nice lesson, guys. A bit beyond me, I'm really between Elementary and Intermediate, but I play badminton with some Chinese friends here in Shanghai and wanted to be able to talk with them more about our matches. And yes, rjberki, the courts are not air-conditioned and we sweat, a lot (especially me!) And there are no showers, so I consider myself lucky to be able to get a taxi home.

Hi pi11ock
