After months of painstakingly writing Chinese characters, we recommend you take a moment to vent your frustrations by grabbing a felt marker and angrily drawing squares, circles, and triangles all over that Chinese textbook. It's strangely liberating, actually. Then, listen to this podcast so you can explain in Mandarin to your teacher what exactly you were doing when she rebukes you for defacing school property.

John,
I noticed that there have been no grammar tags in the last couple of lessons. Hope this is not an indication that the grammar section is falling by the wayside. Also, in the grammar section, I noticed that there is no roll-over pinyin in some instances, e.g. in the introductory list of adverbs. I am hoping this will be added soon!

I noticed in the expansion the sentance 西瓜是圆的--watermelons are round. Maybe I'm being nitpicky, but aren't watermelons oval? Ｗhat's oval in Chinese？ Does the Chinese word 圆 cover all "roundish" shapes?

mayue,

Thank you for noticing. Actually, we've been experiencing a technical difficulty with the database that holds the Grammar Guide entries, but it should be fixed very soon and the grammar tags and Grammar Guide updates will resume.

The Grammar Guide is my baby, and we're not abandoning it!

谢谢你，Man2Toe! Watermelons are my favorite, so I've got to describe them accurately.

我很喜欢吃西瓜。
I really like eating watermelon.
你喜欢吃什么样的？　圆的，还是椭圆的？
What kind do you like? Round or oval?
所有的西瓜，我喜欢吃啊。
All watermelons--I Iike to eat 'em.

BTW, thanks for the kind wishes. In a way, I'm finding Chinese a lot friendlier to learn than Korean. Maybe my Chinese skills will surpass my Korea skills in a few years.

They have some perfectly round watermelons here, just like a small soccer ball. Quite common. I like the ones that are yellow inside the best. No triangles though!

In México the word for watermelon is "sandía" and the colors of the watermelon are used to teach the children the order of the three colors in the Méxican flag. The first color, green, is the outer rind of the watermelon. The second color, white, is the inner rind, and the third color, red, is the red pulp inside. Are there any things that are taught to Chinese children using the shapes or colors of fruits and vegetables?
