Oh Man!!?? What do I do? I've had the beard so long I think my face would peel off if I shaved it.

I grew it as a young man so that I would be taken more seriously. I wanted to look older. at 25 I looked 15 ( I'm not joking ). I also wear a goatee because nothing really grows up the sides,I guess all my chinese friends will just have to think i'm a gangster ( the santa glasses really finish off the look).

Back in the late 80s, I went to Beijing to do grad school research, and had a beard not unlike the one in the picture for this lesson. A Chinese friend told me I should shave it; that the Chinese would not trust me (kind of fits in with the "gangster" idea) -- I didn't want to test that, so I shaved it before I went. Freaked out my little daughter (4 at the time), as she had never seen me without it. :-)

For example, certain Chinese leaders have had mustaches, and the ability to grow one might make a guy seem more mature.

Well, interesting that everyone is talking about appearence. Y'all might well be right about that. When it comes to the sense of touch, however, the women with whom I have interacted, greatly prefer a beard over a shaved face. After all, a shaved face is not shaved for long...all too soon the hairs grow out and the woman is subjected to an irritating experience.
