I am never in Shanghai at the right time for hairy crab season but I have asked about them and never got a really good description of why they are so popular. Jenny is so good at giving you the full significance of any issue with complete candor. She had me laughing along with Amber and it was really cute.

Great topic. The use of commonly understood music is also a form of communication. Thank you for this insight into the Chinese use of music.

Amber you should definitely try the hairy crab. I think you would like it. Be warned, it is a lot of work to eat. I have only had the male, and much to the chagrin of my hosts, I would not eat the yellow part. :-) The white meat is very good however. Their legs are actually quite hairy if you look close.

About the funeral song: Actually, Amber was right... Sometimes they do have a live band playing the song during the funeral procession. We saw it outside right below our apartment in Wuhan in 2001 or '02. In fact, I have the music recorded on a mini-recorder -- the tape is in the U.S., so no chance of uploading it -- it was very beautifully haunting.
