Judging from the lesson intro, it seems that fruit salad doesn’t come with mayonnaise in Western countries. I didn’t know that. Mayonnaise is a “magic” dressing material when you want to make food look Western-style, at least at my home in Japan. Mayonnaise 沙拉酱 (sha1 la1 jiang4) 色拉酱 (se4 la1 jiang4) 美奶滋 (mei3 nai3 zi1) 美乃滋 (mei3 nai3 zi1) I don’t know which of the last two is more authentic.

I got a good idea for a lesson you could pray about doing. Maybe it would fit better in a elementary lesson. A lesson that would help you carry on conversations about farming and gardening. For example: As a question: In the past have you grown much grapes? Do you lose much of your crops because of bugs or animals? When I grew up I had a grape vine in my yard. I would like to learn a lot about gardening and growing plants because I love being able to grow my own food. Maybe I am just dreaming on here. Does anyone else think this would be a good topic in the future?

Mayonnaise on Fruit??? Yuck! :) I can understand putting yoghurt on Fruit though! I love yoghurt with honey or vanilla bean. I am not one for fruit salad though. I would much rather eat fruit with something else.. which is why I like to put yoghurt on it. Getting back to the lesson though: I really appreciate the linguistic explanations in this lesson. This is now on my list of "Best ChinesePOD Newbie Lessons". Also the cultural hints are great too, in regards to manners for saying that something is very good even when it isn't all that great. :) Thanks Ken, you're a real trooper. Since the lessons don't get listened to in order, it seems that Jenny never gets sick and Ken gets sick every few months! :) haha.. poor Ken.. :( You need to get yourself some ginger green tea. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I've had 水果色拉with 色拉酱 and without. But "salad dressing" in the U.S. can be either a mayo like white stuff (the best known being Miracle Whip), or a true salad dressing (Italian, Thousand Island, Bleu Cheese). I've had 水果色拉 with the white stuff, but never with mayonaise. We will often call the Miracle Whip substance Mayo to avoid confusion with the term salad dressing. But then you might get Mayo when you really want Miracle Whip. I prefer my 水果沙拉 plain and aged two or three days.

Actually i've already eaten fruit salad with a kind of dressing in China. it's not really awfull but a little bizarre. So how can I say"don't put mayo"? is that sentence OK : "bie fang jiang" or "don't put anything in it" :bie fang shenmme" correct? Thanks

色拉and 沙拉are interchangeable. It largely depends on personal preference. Evelyne, You can say 别放色拉酱/bie2 fang4 se4 la1 jiang4/don't put salad dressing. Asian mayonnaise is generally quite sweet and creamy. More like cream I suppose. Most Westerners I know are horrified by the taste. But I love a Janpanese brand whose logo is a naked baby.

Hi everybody, have you ever tried frut salad with fish? i have done it once and it was delicious. i know it may sound a bit odd but i guarantee it works. you just have to steam the fish. for example try with some squids of small cuttle fish. cut them in slices and steam them not for long. they don't have to be too soft- you have to feel the fish under your teeth, say:al dente. i have done that with strawberries! hen hao chi!

I can't believe this introduction! Last week in Beijing I was stretching after a large lunch while waiting for my cab. A very thin driver with a big, gap tooth smile gave me the "Buddha belly noogie" you spoke of! Now, back in the states, I was listening to your lesson before I head to the gym to work it off!

Thanks for another very useful lesson and the interesting supplementary vocabulary. There still seem to be some inconsistencies in the pdf transcript - the characters of the dialogue are all right, but the pinyin doesn't always match.

When I ordered "sala" for the first time in Yangshuo I got a fatty mixture of leaves + horsemeat + mayonaise + sugar. That was also the last time. Hi Ken, if you leave all the "Aaahhhh' s" out of your presentation it would heal your throat more rappidly. Bests, (I am a medic !)

You can tell he is still sick but not as badly as this day's lesson. If it's the same day of recording then I would be surprised..

The first line is ok. The next line should read: 不是. 我九月去. bu4 shi4. wo3 jiu3yue4 qu4 Again, the 3rd line is wrong, which should read: 不告诉你! 回来? 时越吗? bu4 gao4su nı3! hui2lai4? shı2yue4 ma? Or should that be: 不告诉你! 回来? 十月吗? Not too sure with that shi2.. but anyway.. The last line looks ok though.

How long has it taken ppl to speak Mandarin well ? just curious and I know everyone is different but how long did it take ? I like learning from Ken and Jenny because Ken has the same sort of voice as mine even tho I am a aussie but it helps me pronouce words better hearing Ken say it, Anywho cya ^_^

Another random question. Why is it that some nouns in chinese end in "zi" and can be taken off while yet, others do not need it at all? Like for example.... chong2zi....mao4zi....nao3zi (please respond)

I have a couple of comments about this lesson... @zeoblade: I disagree with you on this one. There have been some interesting articles published lately which make a strong link between geneology and metabolism. There is some interesting research into why the Russian Blue bull can essentially sit on his can all day and just make muscle, whereas other breeds get fat. I agree that lifestyle is very important for everyone and you shouldn't make excuses for yourself, though. You have to play the cards you're dealt, but not everyone gets the same cards. Regarding the lesson, I found it a little funny that the emphasis in 好吃 (hao3chi1) is on chi1 and not on hao3. In English you would tend to emphasize the 'good', I think. Is this a normal way to add stress in Chinese?

Hi everyone, I'm having problems downloading the lessons - if I try to download them directly from here, it either gives me a big string of random letters on screen, or starts up quicktime and just plays it. The very forst one I tried to get worked, but nothing since then. I can get them fine through the podcast on i-tunes, but I can only seem to find the last 20 or so, of which about 7 or 8 are at Newbie level. If anyone can point me in the direction of how to find the rest of them on i-tunes, that'd be great, as I think that's the easiest way to go about it. I'm set up to get all the future lessons, but I want the past ones too! Thanks, Lou

Jenny, you are referring to Kewpie Mayonaisse which is the most popular mayonaisse in Japan. This mayonaisse is used in several of the Sushi rolls. If you want to make it a little spicy put some Indonesian Sambal, about a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per half cup. Best Foods/Hellmans are the most popular mayonaisse's in the US. Miracle whip is a sandwich spread. Ken get well. Good subject.

I never could get used to mayo on my fruit salad. One other variation on a fruit theme I saw on the menu in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province was Fruit Pizza.

It's a traditional Chinese remedy: poached pear with rock sugar and fritillaria, a TCM ingredient used for curing coughs. It works and tastes delicious!
