我觉得很幸运,我没有恨的人。

How would one translate that sentence? I can't figure out if it means I count myself fortunate. Nobody hates me. or I count myself fortunate. I am not a person that hate others (or hate things/matters in general).

I have made a character-based dictionary of all Newbie and Elementary vocabulary. I have it in Word and PDF form. I would like to share it here, but I don't know how. Could someone make a suggestion.

(I don't have a website, and have no idea how to set one up.)

Hi raygo

Ha, I had never heard of that song! Very interesting. Actually the "fear/love" thing was something that my mom said to me a long time ago. I'm not sure where she got the idea, or if she came up with it herself.

Hi henning

嫌 is close to the English "to be bothered by (some negative adjective.)” So you can say something like 我嫌这件衣服贵 or 他嫌这道菜太淡 etc. It's not as strong as "to hate."

Hi go_manly

It would be best to put it in a Google Doc and then share the link with everyone-- you could start your own conversation on the "Community Page" where you announce it.

Thank you for putting in the time to compile that list.

我觉得幸运,we can discuss a matter that I have been thinking about :)

没有人恨我 Is no person hate me (No one hates me)

没有恨我的人 Is no hate me kind of person (No one hates me)

If I got things right both of the sentences above have the same meaning. Does that mean we don't need to use 的 all the time? Sometimes sentences become long when I try to force 的 into them.

比如说:

有一个小朋友生病了,...  There was a kid who became ill...
有一个(是?)生病的小朋友,...

Are those sentences okay? Do they have the same meaning?

Changye 我来翻译你写的试一试:
我觉得很幸运,我没有(我)恨的人。 ...I don't hate anyone.
我觉得很幸运,世上没有恨我的人。 ...No-one has ever hated me.

对不对?

I tried Google Docs. I've uploaded my PDF. But I can't figure out how to share it without inviting people. It seems that PDFs can only be viewed by invitation. And my Word version is too big. It is 630M, and Google Docs only allows 500M for Word files. I don't really understand the internet/web pages/etc., and how they work. So could you give me a bit more direction?

I've tried another site. Let's see if this works.

My Newbie and Elementary Character dictionary is hopefully here

Yes! It works - you have to click 'Download Now' when you get there.

Sounds to me like you just need to select Share and then select 'publish as web page'. You can also opt to automatically republish the document if you change it.

Once its been 'published', it will have its own unique web address which you can safely share with anyone.

PS. Your link above doesn't seem to be working.

I tried the link, and its working for me.

When you get there, you click the blue 'Download Now' button.

You are redirected to another page, and after enduring a 10 second countdown (because you and I are not premium members), a link appears where the countdown was previously taking place titled "Click here to download this file".

When you do click, the usual window pops up, asking whether you want to Save or Open.

Ah, I see, it's just blocked if you're in China (as I am). Poddies in China will need to access it in a different way.

I still think it might be best to try and turn it into a web page.

The 'different way' you linked to:  Is that a way for you in China to access it, or a way for me to allow you access to it? I didn't really understand what I was seeing.

It's a way for me (and others) in China to access it, don't worry. (There are many websites which are blocked by censors in China, your chosen file hosting site seems to be one of them!)

@dunderklumpen,

I meant 'I feel fortunate that I don't hate anyone.' 我没有恨的人 means 'there is no one that I hate.'  I feel 'blessed' because hatred is not a pleasant sentiment and that no one has done anything to hurt me and lead me to hate them.

'I really can't stand recharging my balance'

没问题。 我问老板,‘麻烦你, 我不会充值。给你钱以后可以帮助我?‘I assume that is bad enough to demonstrate that I really need help.

After six months in China I finally got someone to help me with ringing up for my balance.  I was always put off by this long discussion I didn't understand, until someone explained that it is just an advertisement for the new plans on offer.  Now I tune out for the advertisement and patiently wait for my message about the balance remaining.  I guess the challenge now is to get to understand the ads.  If it is like Australia the plans are in a constant state of flux.

Ummm, I don't think this has a topic-comment structure. Please see it this way, 有一个小朋友(who)生病了. You often see this kind of structures, for example, 今天我没事干 or 有很多人讨厌我.

its a green leafy spice used a lot in Mexican food. (and elsewhere too obviously)

Think salsa. baba mentioned that it is "coriander."  Coriander is the seed, and the leaves are referred to as "coriander leaves" or "cilantro". Cilantro is the Spanish name for the plant.

@go_manly,

Extending rjberki's response, cilantro is used in many Asian dishes as well. Thai green curry uses the roots, stems and leaves. Indian chaat often uses coriander (seed) for flavoring and cilantro (leaf) for garnish. And while salsa often has cilantro, it's ceviche (the fish "cooked" in acid such as lime juice) or reciato that really brings cilantro to mind. If you can find a Mexican grocery, pick up a bottle of Goya brand Reciato and experiment.

BTW: Nice PDF!

go_manly: thanks for creating and sharing that dictionary!

in fact, it is something i've been meaning to ask CPod to consider: add to the vocabulary manager a function that lists all words using a given character.

i don't know if the current data structure allows to do this easily. a quick and dirty way would be adding to each word tags for the characters it contains. that way, when going through the vocab list, one can simply click on the tag to get all the other words using that character that one has studied.  ideally, one would be able to do the same from the flaschards application.

i guess i should add a proposal on this in the "uservoice" forum.

Interestingly the French word for "hate" (noun) is la haine, quite similar to 恨 hèn, maybe some words / expressions are universal?

I try to look for connections between different languages (so it is easier to remember things), so if anyone else knows examples I love to hear them :-)

@go_manly,

Great work on the PDF! This is such a wonderful community.

@songyian,

Before giving an example sentence, I think it's helpful to explain typical behaviours of 撒娇. In a nutshell, it involves act,talk and whine in a sweet and cute fashion (in order to get the person say yes to your demands or dote on you.) For example, 孩子一撒娇,父母就什么都答应了./As soon as the kid 撒娇,parents cave in to their demands.

go_manly,

Thanks heaps for generously sharing your dictionary of the newbie and ellie vocab which I just downloaded without any problems.This will be so useful.Part of the problem with knowing when to leave Newbie behind for example is not knowing how much one might be missing.At this stage it seems to be diminishing returns for me at newbie level and I suppose it will all end up turning up in higher lessons somewhere,but it's nice to know you haven't missed anything basic.For example take the colours.Red,black and white all seem to turn up heaps of times,and I've seen yellow,blue and green turn up ,but when will brown or purple? Thanks again mate.

谢谢 go_manly, the dictionary looks great. It must have been a lot of work!

一第听我也不知道 Cilantro有什么意思。我的词典也翻译 cilantro as coriander probably because the leaves are more commonly used in Australia. 很讨厌! 这个事情同 courgette = zucchini as  zucchini are a type of courgette, but you rarely hear courgette used in Australia, at least where I live :) 我觉得不懂很讨厌的事情,特别如果我不懂我的语。

Pete 我觉得你的"爱/怕"很有意思。这个世界有很多怕。我不知道如果我觉得同,但是还很有意思。我也觉得哭来不可能 express 情感,不来只 sadness /高兴. This would also explain why babies cry a lot, because they can't express themselves with words. Just my thoughts anyway :)

@sebire,

撒娇 is not a 'love/hate' relationship. It's more a personality or a tactic that women and children often use to get attention, doting and get what they want. The typical behavior of 撒娇 is to act cutesy or whiny.
