Basically, 外科 means the surgical department whereas 内科/the internal medicine department involves using medicinese to treat illness - more like a G.P (General Practitioner) department.

Anyone care to mention the names of the various other departments in Chinese hospitals?

BTW I have to go and get my 体检 (tǐjiǎn) health check in about a month...fun stuff.

I also noticed that the pronunciation of "blood" has been used differently.  For example, in the lesson where the husband and wife are arguing, the husband says he will go "mai4 xie3", but here it's "xue4".  I'm curious if both are acceptable and if so if there are any subtle differences in meaning between the two?

血 xue3 xue4 xie3 all are acceptable as far as i know. i doubt regional differences in pronunciation would affect the meaning of blood.

I'm curious how overweight do you have to be to have a professional doctor in China say that you're too fat?  I may be biased but I get the feeling that the tolerance is lower than in the U.S. I can't imagine a doctor in the U.S. saying directly to a patient, "You're too fat" unless they're uncommonly obese.

"xie3" (血) is a colloquial pronunciation, and is usually used when the character 血 works "independently". For example, 我吐了一口血, 血的教训, or 出血 (bleed). In these phrases, 血 itself functions as a single word.

On the other hand, 血 is pronounced as "xue4" when used as a component character of a word, such as 血糖，血压，血管 and 血友病. In short, 血 used in a noun is pronounced as "xue4". It's easy to remember!

Having said that, even native people often mix them up. So, in reality, you can say both 出血 (chu1 xie3) and 出血 (chu1 xue4). Some local people, a doctor included, even say "chu1 xue3".

Theoretically, you have three options to pronounce "血管", i.e. "xue4 guan3", "xie3 guan3", and "xue3 guan3". The right one is "xue4 guan3", but don't worry, natives understand what you mean regardless of your "selection".
