Frequency lists are always based on a corpus. A corpus is a sample of language. There are many types of language: written, spoken, formal, informal, etc. Thus, there are many types of corpora.

The corpus Jun Da used to create the frequency list was a news corpus, and not representative of the most basic spoken Mandarin needed for communication.

Please rest assured that linguists like me take these issues seriously! :)

Thank you for the list! Frequency is indeed at the top of the list when creating content for each level. In newbie and ele, we cover the most high frequency vocab and survival phrases. With no disrespect at all, I have to say these words aren't really high frequency for newbie and ele learners. 

Shenyajing is the voice of the waiteress. Although no native of Dongbei, she did a great job!

A bit more about Dongbei-- it is indeed China's rustbelt. The area was heavily industrialized in the 1950s and 60s. Now it is struggling to make its way as the big state owned steel companies are closing down. There was a good piece about it in the National Geographic a few years ago.

The Northeast has traditionally been a big soy producer, but it's having a hard time competing against heavily subsidized soy from the US and Brazil, among others.

@Pete, "白酒" is so strong that I'd like to call it liquor. One sip, and I'll be drunk!

As for 白酒, I think it tastes like gasoline smells. Then again, I never developed a taste for alcohol.

It is commonly made from the fermentation of plums, but other fruits used include apricots, apples, pears, peaches and cherries
