Lesson Introduction

Hi hao! I'm new to ChinesePod and loving it. Can I suggest that the pin-yin (with tones) are posted on the website for the sentences that are spoken? This is because by just listening to it, its impossible to spell this and the Chinese pronounciation does not easily match to the pin-yin. Thanks. Also, how do you say "I love ice cream"? i.e love not in an emotional sense. I can't imagine it being wo3 ai4 ....

Holy crap John!! I am officially an idiot. If anyone involved with C-pod should know this, it's ME. I'm in actually involved with a 50/50 JV with the NBA and have met Yao Ming in person here in SH. Dumb moment of the month for me. Thanks, Nick (I thought this was like a Center -Zhongxin - where people were hanging out or something...lol)

So Ken and Jenny, Good podcast today - but you say that the Chinese don't actually use "love" like English-speakers do, ie they wouldn't say "I loved that movie". So what do you say instead?

I've always liked the saying ' I love love.' 我爱爱！makes one sound totally ridiculous. Anyways, someone who deserves love at this moment more than icecream and RMB is our dear Aggie, who flew back from Sydney on Sunday and couldn't contain herself from showing up at work at 9 am on monday. Sorry I forgot to say the most important: yes, Chinese are verbally 'lovaphobic'. We are much more comfortable with using 非常喜欢/fei1 chang2 xi3 huan1 instead.

Oh Jenny, on the subject of phobias. I'm trying to compile a list of phobia on the wiki at the moment, I managed to find a list in Chinese but there seem to be two different forms as follows: **恐惧症 and 恐**症, where ** is the subject of the fear. Can either form be used for all of them?

By the way, the proper English term for fear of love is Philophobia. Athough really that's the fear of falling in love or being in love.

Thanks Jenny, although I guess using fei1 chang2 xi3 huan1 probably doesn't get you the same "platinum card" effect. So Bazza, then English speakers are philophiliacs?

Since Yao Ming was mentioned in this discussion, I just learned that Shaq was in China, http://www.nba.com/gallery/20060815/060815_shaqwall_18.html. His name is translated as 侠客行. Is 行 pronounced as hang in this case? The Chinese dictionary tells me that 侠客 is heroic guest and 行 (hang) is professional. So Shaq was treated as a professional heroic guest in China last week.

Thanks for another useful lesson. I'm learning in Taiwan, where I think it's safe to say that an “我爱台湾!” will make you considerably more friends than an “我爱中国!”If you can say it with the Taiwanese (民南话) vowels, consonants and tones, then all the better! --Scott

Scott In Taiwanese you'd say something like 寡爱台湾 gua ei tai-oaN . You can even say gua ei gong tai-oaN-oe (I like speaking Taiwanese).
