Elementary - MSN and QQ

Discussion

Reports reveal a mysterious drop in the GDP of several countries in the last ten years. Analysts have been concerned and perplexed. But they have overlooked the telltale signs. The blinking orange task bar, the familiar 'ping', the too-fast typing smirk and dexterous click of the mouse when the boss nears. A decade of workdays have passed that much happier for office toilers since the miracle of MSN. Hear about it, and its Chinese counterpart, in this podcast.

I am just stunned to see a lesson on QQ and MSN on CPod! I just found out about QQ maybe 4 months ago and have yet to understand everything I can do with it; usually I just guess what certain button's do. But on a more positive note...I'm really excited everytime I understand an Elementary lesson. This means that I am making progress. *YaY*

One of my friends once jokingly told me that he was very proud of his sixteen-year old “multitasking” daughter. She can do several things very effectively at one time in front of her PC, such as watching a movie, eating snacks, net surfing, sending emails and short messages, making a cell phone call, and of course, chatting online. The problem is that she unfortunately has very poor “doing homework” function in her multitasking capability. chat 聊天 (liao2 tian1) online 在线 (zai4 xian4) multitask 多任务 (duo1 ren4 wu4)

Why is there such a fascination with giving meanings to numbers in China I wonder? My favourite has to be 419 = one night stand -- partly it makes sense in English but not Chinese ("For one night") You can definitely connect to the Chinese QQ servers from outside of China. To sign up for a QQ number you have to be able to read Chinese -- the anti fraud system requires you to retype pictures of Chinese characters to check that you are a real person. They tended to be fairly simple characters though so it's not totally impossible for us foreigners. Much better than QQ is Tencent Messenger, now finally available in English as well. It uses the same network as QQ but has a more "business like" interface. I still have vastly more business contacts using QQ than I do MSN, although the number of MSN users is definitely growing. One thing in QQ's favour is that it's noticeably faster to transfer files than it is by MSN.

I've never met anybody in China who uses Yahoo...I guess we hang with different circles. QQ for Windows is what I would call very "invasive" software. Seems to embed itself quite deeply into the operating system. As a Mac user, where most programs are a single file that can be completely erased by dragging into the trash can, I tend to mistrust such software. Be careful with this software, click a few wrong buttons and suddenly the person you're talking to can take control of your mouse cursor from his/her computer and go poking around your computer looking at all your documents, etc. QQ for Mac is still extremely basic, and QQ for Windows English version also doesn't have the full functionality of the Chinese version. Overall, I think the software is very good for what it's used for. Socially awkward students attempting to express themselves and communicate with each other, but for a Western adult it's a bit over the top. I think, however, that for somebody who is looking for a clean interface, reliability, fast file transfers, and good voice quality, Skype (Mac and PC versions) beats QQ and MSN hands down. Skype is also gaining popularity very quickly among Chinese people, especially among young professionals.

If anyone is looking for a less-invasive QQ client (for windows), there is Tencent Messenger 2008 (http://im.qq.com/intl/en/tm/2008/) with both the download page and client itself in english-language. It offers less 'extra' functionality than the QQ client (no virtual pet, far fewer buttons, and no adware/spyware), but you can still populate a friends list and do most of the chat-centered stuff (for me, everything I wanted QQ for in the first place). Even if you'd rather the regular client, the TM2008 page has an english-language link to create a QQ account that can be used regardless of which client you use (look for the link in the upper right-hand part of the page). Hope this helps anyone still trying to get things to work.

I use QQ and msn to chat with my friends in China and agree that the English QQ does not show characters, which is a little annoying (I can't read them but could cut & paste them into Google Language tools if they would display). Anyway, my question is this: I just used "baochi lianxi" as shown on the lesson pdf but my friend didnt recognise it at first and then corrected it to "bao chi lian xi". Are the spaces important when writing Pinyin? Cheers guys and keep up the good work Pete

Hi sh... sha... shagrat. I'm just wondering, does your name mean the same thing in the UK as it does in Oz? ;-) I don't think the spaces are important at all, especially to Chinese people, since they tend to write English without spaces andwonderwhywefinditsohardtoread. But if that person was not very used to using pinyin, perhaps they needed the additional help of separating it into the character lengths so that they could parse an unfamiliar form into chunks more easily recognised. That's my guess.

AuntySue and shagrat, I was not used to type pinyin before. we get used to type each word's pinyin separately in China. And i should admit that i was puzzled by those pinyin without tones sometimes. You know, a pinyin can have several characters to match in chinese. Such as, ta=他/她/它; shui=谁/睡/水/税; there are many examples alike. So i think it is important to add the tones when you type pinyin. Otherwise, it will take time to guess the meaning sometimes.:-) when it come to QQ, i just want to mention a pop saying “潜水”qian2shui3. 潜水original meaning is dive or diving, but in this QQ context it means 隐身yin3shen1. 隐身means that someone who hide and pretend to be offline.

I know when typing a lot of pinyin, the easiest way is just to put the number at the end of the syllable, and for neutral tone just leave off the number: Ta1 shi4 wo3de peng4you. That is a way to specify tones, but I don't know if that will exactly be quick for a Chinese person to read, as they don't necessarily think about what tone such-and-such word is right away. Yet I have to agree with Cassie, that a sentence like the above is much easier to read if the tones are there, otherwise have to think too much. For example, "lianxi" can be "lian2xi4" (to get in touch) and "lian4xi2" (to practice/exercise).

Somewhere I heard that Chinese composers usually do not attach much importance to tones anymore when they write songs in Mandarin, which probably means that tones are not so crucial when listening to Chinese songs. At the same time, I also heard that tunes with a quick tempo, especially rap music, are extremely difficult to catch their lyrics even for native Chinese, partly because tones are being almost completely neglected in those music pieces. On the other hand, it is said that Cantonese composers tend to try to synchronize tones with melody lines as much as possible, since otherwise it would be difficult to catch lyrics in Cantonese, which has more tones than Mandarin has. That is the main reason why a Chinese song often has two different lyrics both for Mandarin and Cantonese. What I care about should be something not worth bothering about for natives, but I am interested in tones in Chinese songs.

Hi matthiask, In fact, almost all the TV music shows in China provide captioned lyrics in Mandarin. I think it is a very wise way to broadcast music programs in a country of which official tongue is a tone language. Similarly and thankfully, most of Chinese dramas and movies have Mandarin subtitles. They are very helpful not only for deaf people, but also for Chinese-learners and “native Chinese dialect speakers”.

Hi casie, Thanks again for your answer. You have a point there, guessing the meaning from the context is vital in listening not only to songs, but also to conversations, news, and dramas in a foreign language, although that is not so easy for non-native speakers. Come to think of it, comprehending song lyrics completely when you first listen to them might be somewhat difficult in any languages. The most typical examples should be opera music, especially coloratura sopranos, and Chinese folk songs by “宋祖英”. p.s. 邓丽君 and 宋祖英 are my favorite Chinese singers.

I think people somewhere in this thread said you were trying to type the characters on the second page into the box? No no no... you aren't to repeat the characters, you are to answer the questions using what you answered on the 1st page. (just to clarify my SHOUTING MESSAGE above a little bit more, and make sure you try again if you were just trying to type the same sentence into the box)

Hmmm... you saying I'm corrupt? Ha ha. I downloaded that file directly from QQ while shelling into my account there, and just used the command line "wget" program to get it. Never had problems getting other executables that way. Let me know if the one you download from qq.com works.

"(88 also means bye bye)" In Germany, using this abbreviation would be a rather foolish idea. Could get you in real trouble with the authorities.* (However, I doubt they monitor QQ. Though that's not such a strange notion - I heard they passed a kind of monitoring act permitting storing all virtual data of their citizens for some months in order to counteract terrorism) *(Why, you might wonder. I had trouble hearing the ending "ng" sound in yòng (用). It sounds too much like yòu. I'm slowly getting used to hearing speakers dropping their "g"s in Chinese. After all, English speakers drop their "g"s a lot too - poor "g". However, dropping the "ng" is a new one for me. What was in the background of the dialog? It sounded like a hockey game.

It will do this in W2000 & Xp if you set control panel to PRC also the daes will print in Chinese in word documents.

I run NJ Star commuicator in Chinese mode to see all characters on QQ & WEB. But need to paste QQ text into NJ Star WP, before using in some applications; NJStar WP also gives e the pinyin of he text an helps mewith learning the Chinese text
