There are a few ways of dealing with getting stopped at an apartment complex gate. There is the 'tunnel vision' technique. To truly perfect this skill you must be on a bicycle to facilitate quick getaways and be immune to yelled threats. Another technique is the 'dense foreigner' skill. No explanation needed. Finally, there is the 'listen to the ChinesePod podcast' technique, highly recommended and transferable to any third degree grilling, Chinese or not.

I never did this, but what would be the impact of just ignoring the guy at the gate? Is it like ignoring the doorman at some swanky Manhattan apartment, and the doorman calls the police?

Also, isn't wei4le also "in order to", as in

I also live in a gated community in China. One day we returned home a little later than usual and the security guy would not let us in. Obviously the guy was new and did his job, but we really wanted to go home! After a few friendly request he still would not let us in we were puzzled a bit. We showed our keys, business card etc. but no luck. Eventually I got really mad and started screaming "I live here" (in Chinese). That somehow seemed to do the trick.

Haha,

Sure it's easy to complain about over protective guards until you come home to a missing bicycle..

I lived in a large building complex of about 30 - 40 buildings and a few thousand people. Everday there was probably about a dozen or so reports of bike/scooter/car theft and vandalism reported. When I questioned the guards they had told me that the problem had gotten out of hand and the new policy was "protect your property".

If your gaurds are good be sure to thank them with smokes and oranges!!

Many of residential complex/小区/xiao3 qu1 in China are huge, like Xuchen said, a couple dozens of buildings. I find security guards there have a very philosophical approach to their job. They look at, nod and smile at you non-committedly. You never know whether they really know who live there and who don't.

I used to get freaked out by the security guard that would blow kisses at me as I entered the ground floor of the building. It got to the point where I would go in through the underground carpark.

In the end I declared to myself that enough was enough and I made friends with the guy. While he speaks the most incomprehensible Chinese I have ever heard, we seem to get on alright now.

How do you say, "Please don't blow air kisses?"

Yes, 为了 (wèile) means for the sake of; in order to:

For your sentence, it's good, but is a little smoother to say:

Perhaps you can help me another one. Old men in my neighbourhood sometimes pat my bum, and then start giggling at me. In the UK, this might suggest something else. What does it mean in China?
