Walking through a street food miasma where you smell the food before you see it, and seeing it is not necessarily believing it, this lesson is about one of the better smelling and easily-identifiable of the street foods of China. Which in itself is a good enough reason to purchase. Listen to this podcast and learn how to, in Mandarin Chinese.

Mmmm. Yum. My two favorite street foods in Nanjing were roasted sweet potatoes and sand-roasted chestnuts. Oh, and there was one woman who made a colorful cake of honey and dried fruits that tasted like a supreme version of Pan Forte. I couldn't get enough of it. My then-son-in-law, a nanjing ren, said he'd never seen anything like it.

Fortunately for us in the San Francisco Bay Area, one finds roasted chestnuts easily on the streets and in the center of malls.

It's funny after having traveled through Asia the food I still crave the most is street food. I know this is a bit off topic, but I was wondering have you considered doing a lesson on milk tea? Thanks so much for helping me keep up my chinese, even while I can't be in China!

"Liang Xiang" chestnuts are well known. "Liang Xiang" refers to part of the mountain area of "Fangshan" district of Beijing.
Mix chestnuts with sand, sprinkle plain sugar syrup, fry it till the sand becomes pitch-black. The chestnuts will then look shining and bright as if a layer of oil has been applied to the shells. People used to use shovel to fry, now the process is electrically operated.

The standard sugar roasted chestnuts require the shell to be supple and crisp. The outer shell, the internal membrane, and the nut should be separated effortlessly when you open it.

Unfortunately, roasted chestnuts only exists as a song for most people in the States; how deprived they are.
If one were to cover all of the food of China, you'd need another separate level aside from intermediate and the rest. The food is so amazing, that you could form another Chinese Pod based solely upon it.
Although I would love a lesson about the sweets of China, this is absolute torture! I'm so hungry!
