DIRECTOR'S CUT - All this talk about movies, comics (graphic novels), myths, etc., made me think of DVDs available in the US. You know the box set of Lord of the Rings with the director's commentary, extra out-takes, alternate expanded clips. Woudn't it be great to have similar 'added value' with some of the Cpod casts. In that 梦想 of mine, Jenny 唱 Only You, the extended version. Whoever pitches and brings on board Peter Jackson to do a re-make of The Legends of the Monkey King will become obscenely rich and shift a whole generation to learning about China. 这个高级播客很有趣，不过水平对我有点太高了。过六个月我再听一下。我能了解百分着百这个播客我觉得我的中文就够了，因为我可以好好看国内的电影和读这种故书，对我的生活特别快乐。今天的节日你们有没有送凯恩一个礼物吗？他的性格是最年轻的，好像热闹乖乖小朋友，对不对？

What a great lesson! Maybe, my all time favorite because I can listen again and again as I progress. Big chunks of lexical goodies here. Thank you. This lesson along with the Boss being fired will be burned permanently on my I-pod. I will have many questions later. I want to start with an easy one. Ken if you give Power Point Presentations to investors or at language learning seminars, I suggest you can extract a slide or two from this lesso to show lexical chunks even for a Newbie. My first printed copy is almost completely highlighted and lots of pencil comments on it as well. So to my first question 有约会 ? Ok , 為什麼, 没有 "嗎" at the end? The reason I ask is : listening to my Taiwanese friends when they are speaking casually among ourselves, they can get very lyrical with 嗎's, 了's and 的's along with other final words. (Especially on Friday afternoons) Forget tones, they get drawn out into a long maaaaaaaaa? or laaaaaaaa ????? I know it is just to be inquisitive or needle someone. I hear 有约会吗 ?????? on Friday's when one of the guys asks one of the others ( who is very nice and very much a nerd/geek but has the most beautiful and sweet "friend" ) that none of the guys can understand what she can possibly see in him if she really does see anything in him. So after asking him something similar to playing basketball, look at computers on Saturday and when he replies he is busy. I hear 有约会吗 ?????? So in this case would "吗" have been a very interesting addition to have asked Jenny in her role playing here of staying home to watch Journey to the West. And then do you say 独自吗 ?????? Maybe you are fearful of the tone police but I would think it can be useful to add a touch of realism here as you have done a few times. My feeling is every Chinese person I have met loves to have dramatic moments even when it is just negotiating over the price of a chicken. Mike in Jubei

I watched 七剑 (Seven Swords) today. 很好电影。
Really pleased you all liked this... And am relieved that the time was actually okay...I was worried, seeing how "Tone Police" could easily turn into "Time Police". And how about our Jenny's cover? I'm not advanced yet, but I listen to all of them. This is my favorite one yet. It is way too hard for me, but I enjoyed it.
I was feeling a stomachful of butterflies (errh,what a gross image) about this lesson only because of the length. Sorry to sound cocky, but I mean how could anyone not like a lesson on 西游记? It's a Chinese constitution, with each branch of the enterprise (the novel, TV , film and online game) a phenomenal success in its own right. But of course, the novel is the source of all. For me personally, the fondest 西游记 memory was with the film. It came out when I was 12, and my mum had 2 free tickets from the hospital she was working at. One afternoon after school, she asked me to take a bus to the cinema, which was an one hour trip from home. It was absolutely my first time taking the bus on my own. And it was fantasticly empowering. I totally felt I reached self-realisation after making my way to the cinema. S大话西游 and my maiden solo bus ride.
Yes, Very good lesson. Xi you ji was good, I had high hopes for the new series when I saw some footage of it in one of Liu de hua's MVs, But it was very disapointing. When I was a small boy living in Ireland, I used to watch a Japanese version of xi you ji called 'Monkey!'. everybody loved it, Jenny you can ask Ken about this. The thing that freaked me out a little about the chinese version when I first stated watch the chinese version was the Pigs make up and the fact that they kept changing the actor that played the monk. Last year I got the whole xi you ji series on DVD, I still havent finished it yet. Any way thanks very much for the lesson.

At the library the other day, in the Chinese section, I happened to see a several-volume set of "Journey to the West" which I'd never heard of... wondered if it was something famous due to its size! (Chinese Literature lesson 101: Large = famous) So that's just enough background exposure to prepare my mind for today's lesson!! I love it when the timing works out like that... when you notice something in passing, and then it comes up again in conversation (or in Chinesepod).

Mike and all, 天马行空 is predominatly a positive term for wild imagination, whereas I guess 'pigs can fly' borders more on the negative and even deriding side. Does it? You could use 豬有翅膀 or 豬会飞, but a truly authentic Chinese equivalent is 母猪会上树/mu3zhu1 hui4 shang4 shu4/female pigs can climb up the tree. So sexist, as if male pigs can do that. 上/shang4f unctions as 爬/pa2 here. And even more 天马行空is the Shanghainese version, 螃蟹会笑/pang2xie4 hui4 xiao4/crabs can laugh. I am sure there are an abundance of local twists on this. Anyone ever heard of any? Dai, What a marvelous use of the lesson's 'star' vocab .
Jenny, Aggie Maybe you mentioned in the discussion, I am slowly going through this lesson both for the dialogue ( lexical chunks) and the fascinating words So do you think 天马行空的 is similar to our Western (US?) 豬有翅膀 or 豬会飞 ? Does Chinese have a similar expression related to pigs or are they just too good to do anything with but eat. And I will stay away from where monkey's flights are reported to originate from. Thanks Fu Da-Wei for posting a link to the actual novel. That's probably the nearest I get to having a physical Chinese novel, so I think I'll have a go at reading it (with the help of Hanzibar). :)

Is it possible I'm the first? 不可能的。 My son was in Chinese camp a few years ago and they used to watch a Monkey cartoon. He was able to sing the entire opening song - 猴哥猴哥 - is that right? Monkey Brother? 太可愛. His Chinese has regressed quite a bit since. He was born and lived two years in Taiwan. But five years in Philadelphia has taken its toll on both of us. 我老婆的中文也可能退步了一點。Need more cartoons. Can anybody recommend where to buy Mandarin DVDs that will work in the States? LukeLightning, I don't speak or read Chinese yet, but since no one else has figured out your riddle I'm going to take a stab at it and say the answer is 42.
I've translated but still don't quite get it... The plot of Journey to the West is to travel to the West to get the Buddhist Scriptures. Why did they go east and not south? Answer: Because Nanwu'amituofo - Nanwu'amituofo is one of the Buddhist incantations. ?????!
"Nan wu a mi to fo" is a phonetic transliteration of a sanskrit mantra, but literally it reads "The South (nan) doesn't have (wu) the Amida Buddha."
Ian Jenny always speaks English at the start of the advanced shows for the benefit of any beginners who may have inadvertantly dowloaded an advanced lesson, does it really matter at what exact point she starts to speak Chinese? Besides, I usually hear them say 我们应该说中文. Introducing Aggie in this way is merely a way of keeping the speech flowing at the start of the show. I don't think the way in which she is introduced has any impact on the lessons effectiveness. Your comment is redundant, don't you think? I only ever hear Jenny say "ChinesePod, coming to you all the way from Shanghai, China." There's nothing wrong with this sentence, it's regularly used in broadcasting, and Ken usually says the same thing. And finally, I think Ken's presence is what makes the intermediate lessons so effective. Hearing a non-native speaker go through the lesson with Jenny is very encouraging for students. Ken is our classmate, and he has the knack of asking the right questions at the right time. And to whoever said Ken is tone-deaf (I can't remember who it was) you're wrong. Sure his tones aren't perfect, but who's are? The fact that Ken's Chinese is not yet at an advanced lesson is what makes his role so vital. If you take a Chinese class in a classroom, your classmates aren't all going to have perfect tones, are they? You listen to the teacher for the correct pronunciation, and try to learn from your classmates mistakes. Personally, I think Ken is doing an excellent job, and I look forward to hearing his dulcit tones in the next intermediate lesson!
This will be really helpful, as I currently prefer how you talk mostly in English and Jenny in Chinese, not that I couldn't understand you two if you only spoke Chinese, but really helps me to stay focused and hear the conversation from not only two different culture viewpoints, but also language usage. This is definetly what makes ChinesePod different than any other book/CD i've used. Just hearing how you two interact makes it interesting, even if you were talking about watching grass grow.
But I'm curious to know, did Jenny and Aggie's version get canned? While it doesn't matter to me since I now have both versions, this will be really helpful to hear your and Jenny's version first, and then the advanced level one. It would be nice to have more ties to lessons like that... for a not long off advanced lesson to follow an Intermediate/Upper-Intermediate lesson and be linked together and use the same vocab and introduce more.

上西天 has two meanings. 上西天 包含两个意义。
the first is to die and go to heaven, but the second is to seek out the buddha to gain insights on how to protect others.

‘非常de～’我一直想确认是哪个‘de’；不仅是在这篇课程里的好几遍，其实这是朱琦老师爱用的说法之一，对吧（不过我在别的地方没见到过）。
经常出现的语气词我也想确认，怎么写那些 ‘ei’，‘ai’ 等等。
幸亏你的帮助这些地方弄清楚了，于是我确实非常地满意——谢谢！

To make my question clearer, maybe this 非常地有想象力 is not the best example of 非常地+形容词. But later on for instance there is also 非常非常地忠心，非常的忠诚， 非常地多，also 就是演得非常非常地好 (actually these de's I was also not sure of，if they are 地 or 的).
So--when and when not to use the 地 between the 非常 and Adj (which is preferable?)? Could we say 非常忠心 and 非常忠诚 to mean exactly the same?

“非常”后面加不加“地”几乎是一样的。加“地”的时候更有强调的感觉。所以有些人喜欢说“非常地棒，非常地好”
“非常”也可以做形容词，后面加“名词”，用“的”或者不用都行。比如：
那是一段非常的时期。

上西天中的西天指的是印度，因为印度是佛教的发源地。
CPod, there's still a (slight) problem with the pop-up translations in the dialogue on this lesson. They all start with a single quote: ' . This means that when you add the words by clicking on them, they are added with that same single quote in the English. This is easily fixed in one's personal vocab tab, but I thought I should mention it anyway.

改天看看，这里的网吧正在装修中，被闹死了，听不见动画配音。因为我的笔记本不久前发生事故，所以最近经常来到这里上网，搞装修的工人每天上班，每天上至少12个小时的班，每个礼拜没有一天休息，某工人说的他必须加班，一则是要挣钱，二则是被逼的。这里的工人中，有很多是女性。
各有所长。真人可以表演出很细腻的人间情感，如悲伤，愤怒，友爱等等。
动画可以夸张，并有所创新，增加了合理的改动。
比如：原著里孙悟空和哪吒打斗，不分输赢胜负。但是在动画片里，哪吒（ne2zha）跟着孙悟空回到猴山山洞里，一起喝酒聊天，交朋友，然后假装被打败，走出山洞。
我很喜欢这个改动，这符合孙悟空和哪吒的性格，他们都是很有正义感的勇士，互相欣赏，所以交朋友是很正常的，也会让观众高兴。
六小龄童艺名的来历：
他的爸爸艺名是六龄童，他的哥哥是小六龄童，也是一位优秀的猴戏演员，但是不幸的是，很早就生病去世了。他继承父兄的表演，取名六小龄童。现在，他只有一个女儿，不适合演猴戏，所以他一直在挑合适的接班人，他的老家在绍兴，他经常去绍兴挑“小猴子”。
我太喜欢他了，所以一讲起来就没完：）
不过，要说好玩，最好玩儿的还是原著《西游记》。xiaohu, 我看了你的自我介绍，有那么高的表达水平，令人赞叹！以你的能力，读读原著吧，会找到更多乐趣。请读正版“人民文学出版社”的，哈哈。
现在正在拍新版的西游记，人物造型还不错。
小时候，我在捷克斯洛伐克电视台看过《西游记》，真爱上它。那个时候，跟我同年代的捷克人和斯洛伐克人都很喜欢看这个电视剧，现在也记得孙悟空，那个猴子王。在我的国家播的时候，《西游记》的正式的翻译就是《猴子王》。看起来跟这个课的英文名字一样。
