We had some confusion around 'heater' and 'air conditoner' in the comments last week. Hope this lesson has cleared things up. 暖气/nuǎn qì mostly refer to central heating or radiators, while 空调/kōng tiáo is an air conditioner that has both cooling and heating functions.

the couple in this lesson likely live in a brand new apartment with high quality windows, and maybe on the top floor. The apartments I lived in in the north were still cold even when central heating was turned on, which wasn't until November 15th. Thank God for long johns.

When I first came to Shanghai and felt cold, people told me to turn on the air conditioner. I had no idea what they were talking about because as the way I see it, the main purpose of an air conditioner is to make a room cool! The heating function on the air conditioner is just something put on as an ornament. Anyway, I'm still surprised that it seems almost no Chinese know the simple English word 'heater'.

Before my first winter in Shanghai, I thought, "I'm from Michigan. No problem. It is way colder there." But now I know, Shanghai winters are far more uncomfortable for the very reason John said at the end of this lesson.

The place where we live may be an exception in 北方, as we don't use 暖气, but 空调. There used to be 暖气 in the very past because the old rotten units are still remaining in each of the rooms but they are for no use any more. Anyway, to live just on 空调 would be too uncomfortable so we are also using different types of electric heatings.

How should I say "electric heating" in Chinese? My dictionary lists terms like 电热器 dian4re4qi4, 加热器 jia1re4qi4 and 暖房装置 nuan3fang2 zhuang1zhi4. What would be the most commonly used term?

How much does the electricity usually cost a month? That is a big headache for local people. Just for the record, my monthly electric bill is only 70RMB in summer and 100RMB in winter.
