Jenny, how do you break down my name? It's 黄. It's not a really common Korean name, and people always ask me if I'm Chinese! I just tell them "sure, why not," and this confuses them greatly, since in the US, it is borderline politically incorrect to ask someone where they come from. Does anybody have 荒 as a last name? I want to try it out for kicks, since it is much more 神秘 than "yellow."

It's not clear why the last person did not get in. Is it because he was not on the list or did he screw up the pattern? Or is it because he used mei instead of yang?

Seems like the common pattern is to say the radical first.

If I was following the pattern of the first 4 names I might say jiang would be:

姜，女羊姜

Or is 姜，美女姜 the way it's said in China (and he's not on the list)?

We say 黄,草头黄/or草字黄, because the radical is 草字头(grass). 荒 would make a good stage surname.

I concluded the person was not admitted because of the incorrect order just as you suggest.

I've only read the lesson, and so maybe there is a different explanation therein.

Also, for all of you who celebrate this holiday, 感恩节快乐！

billm,

Breaking down the surname isn't always based on radicals. Very often, it's based on a character (or part of one) which makes up the surname. And very often, we choose the more poetic or memorable way to break down the surname. For example, it makes sense to say 女羊姜, but it's certainly more poetic to say 美女姜。
