We don’t want that to happen, so we want to help with this podcast in the form of a Mandarin Chinese lesson on translating.

Andy 食神
Here is a question regarding translation and transcription in China. Let’s say you’re asked to provide testimony in court. You as asked to recall the dialogue of a conversation. You recall and give your testimony in Shanghainese because the dialogue at that moment was in Shanghainese. Does the court transcript show the dialogue in Putonghua or Shanghainese? What dialect goes into the record?

Will
I've just started reading Pride and Prejudice in Chinese translation. From what I've read so far, it's a superb translation, fulfilling all three of the XingDaYa requirements - fluency, accuracy and I forgot the other one, but I'm sure it fulfils it. There's the same biting criticism and carefully chosen words, and it doesn't read like it's just been translated word for word. It sounds Chinese. It's available in Public Domain (I think) at http://www.baiyun.net/chineseversion/pride/index.html . They also have Sense and Sensibility - http://www.baiyun.net/chineseversion/sense/index.html , but I haven't looked at it yet. I'm assuming the same skillful translator.
