I have no interest in WoW, and much of the technical vocab in this lesson I personally will never use. But I still think it was a great lesson. This is one of the things that makes ChinesePod so extroardinary: its encyclopedic range of lessons for all levels and all interests.

Besides, there was plenty more to the lesson than WoW jargon. Some of the vocab applies to other games, some to the quality of internet service; even some of the technical vocab has military application and is useful for historical fiction and war movies. The second half of the lesson is not about the details of the game, and the discussion between David and John explains things for the outsider.

An excellent lesson of this quality does not need to justify its existence. No user is under an obligation to listen to, study, and like every lesson produced. There's a cornucopia of others to choose from.

I was wondering about the translation of 联机 as a LAN. Seems to me that 区域网络 is a LAN, and that 联机 is really machine-to-machine which need not involve a LAN.

For example, I have a home network, cat-6 in the walls and two wireless access points one of which is connected to an ADSL service. My home network is not a LAN. It is a sub-network, with a point-to-point connection to a WAN. Right, a tad techie, but that's me.

不过我从来没玩这些电子游戏了.我比较喜欢又读中文又写软件 .. 如果我有空就我打网球.

I play Warcraft on battle.net nearly everyday. It's the best game ever. There are millions of players around the globe which is divided into 4 regions, East America, West America, Asia, and Europe. This is a strategy game that requires serious planning and flawless execution. There are four races in the game: Orc, Undead, Human and Elf. You are allowed to control max 3 heroes and around 10 to 20 armies depending on the level of the armies you are making. The main objective is to defeat your opponent by training (called creeping) your heroes and armies to be more supperior. In the battle, you need to micro your armies carefully so that you are able to use the most effective spells, skills, and weapons.

Hi guys,

I like this lesson, but why not something on the truly Chinese art of war -- 孫子 and all that? There is quite a cult of 孫子 in management literature sold in the West ("the wisdom of the Orient for middle-management). Could make a fun lesson!

yours always,

Hello!

I havent heard the lesson yet, but I will definitely listen to it when i get time, as a chinese learner and wow player this is a very very helpful and nice topic to learn. I have played 魔兽世界 in china, and when I came back to europe, I joined a chinese gaming community on european servers, typing and chatting over voicechat in chinese. I know quite a few people that could use this, even though I myself dont see myself as upper intermediate just yet.

In response to the game being waste of time, while i believe there should be a balance in time spend and having other things to do is healthy, I myself learned a lot of Chinese by playing this game in chinese, like I did when learning English, by playing English games, practicing listening and spoken skills over voicechat.

Chinesepod, best ever, 我们是魔兽玩家！( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHjg65mQJkw ， War on internet addiction)

Hi, I don't get why you erased your original, totally uncontroversial response to Baba and then went on to change usernames at least twice. Also the profile says you're female. I wonder, maybe you (the original poster) set up this account and then decided to give it to a friend?

Could you please oblige and de-baffle me and anyone else who happened to be looking when you posted the original comment? But if not here, then at least perhaps in a PM to Baba? I say all this because I'm assuming good faith here.

I can see how if you don't play computer games that you would find the words used in this lesson too specialized or not very useful, but for me I loved this lesson! I don't play wow but i occasionally play Starcraft with some Chinese friends and learning the gaming terms has been great! (Also I would respond in Chinese but I'm at work and my computer won't support it :(.

John,

I'm an original Starcraft-er. Even after a decade + its still fun. I don't know if Starcraft 2 will EVER see the light of day. They've been saying its almost ready now for years.

I got sucked in to WoW for a while (okay somewhat addicted) but managed to quit playing long before my other friends did :)

These days I just hit it with FPS games like the Battlefield series etc. I'm amazed at just how many Battlefield 2 servers are based in (or run by) Chinese groups now. It is a different landscape than when the game was released in 2005.
