The etymology of 传 is quite interesting. 人 on the left is the radical...fair enough. On the right we have 专 which in one definition can mean "monopolise, take sole possession"...which may suggest that despite A's urging ,this guy is not going to pass that ball. [j/k...I realise it's the phonetic here...still a funny coincidence in meaning]. This does lead me to a clarification question though. I presume in most [all?] cases the spoken language always predated the written. In other words when we have characters being formed the phonetic was chosen based on the fact that we already have the word in existence in the spoken language and they need to find a phonetic that gets close to that sound ,right?

This 射门 caught my attention for a couple of reasons. Firstly I have read here and hear on cctv 5 [in a brief listen] 打门 ...which is more common?

The other reason it caught my eye is that I recall 射 turning up in the Western Zodiac lesson and John saying that 射手 is not the usual term for archer and is pretty much only found in 射手座 Sagittarius . I guess he was referring to 射手 and not 射 on it's own,but anyway, still interesting to see it's used elsewhere.

So they don't have BYO (bring your own) in the US?

They arequite common in Australia so restuarants avoid having to have the complex and troublesome (extra inspections, paperwork etc.) alcohol licence.

The charge is usually called "corkage", even if there is no cork. And some places will charge you if you bring your own cake (as some people celebrating birthdays do) calling it "cakage".

卡卡 and 梅西are perhaps more useful names, but my far my favorite Chinese transliteration of a player's name in this world cup is: 查巴拉拉 Tshabalala. The play-by-play guys on CCTV5 sounded positively joyous every time they said his name.

南非都出局了世界杯，这么可怜！
Nánfēi dōu chūjúle shìjièbēi, zhème kělián!
South Africa is out of the World Cup already, such a pity!

We've used all our World Cup mojo in the News and Features thread. :-)

The France/ South Africa game yesterday was just ridiculous. ~drama~ One sending off, S Africa just needed one more goal to qualify. Really heartbreaking.

It just seems like all the major nations (bar brazil) are really crumbling under the pressure, which is making it all a lot more interesting. You can feel the tension in the air in England today as we prepare for another ridiculously important game. (which I won't be able to watch :-( ).

One thing I really liked about the dialogue was the fact that the wife made an error. As a struggling learner trying to follow a conversation I think I would generally be working under the assumption that anything that either I couldn't quite follow or didn't seem to quite make sense would be due to my lack of understanding of the grammar or that I'd lost something in translation. I think it's an important reminder of another possibility of what could be going on in a dialogue.Furthermore ,spotting such an error would be a good sign one was getting on top of the language and holding one's ground so to speak.

I hope the US get through to the next round. They have a bunch of talented players and a great, never-die attitude (they're always that way though come to think of it. and they're playing without the fervent support from home many other teams have!). Would enjoy seeing them go far.

Japan tough? What they are is boring me out of my mind (they have to be by far the most boring team in this 世界杯, though I suppose it will be worth it if they're able to advance as I said to Changye some days ago). But somebody there needs to remember you're supposed to try to take some serious shots on goal during games!

France and Italy (England too probably, though I like their array of talent much better) are big names but aging teams that had their best chances years ago when their major stars were shining brightest, not now. They're veteran players, coming off hard seasons, exhausted, injured. Not at all surprising that they should struggle.

I do hope a couple of African teams make it into the next round. Ghana maybe? Looking quite difficult but I really wish Cote D'Ivoire would.

Brazil are really alone among the 32 teams; they're on a different plane. Doesn't mean they'll win though. The World Cup isn't about finding out who's the best team of soccer players right? It's just about playing to see who wins it!

* England played to win like they had to today. And looks like the US won in the dying minutes. Great games. OK and I take that back about England with their best chances in the past. Two exciting teams going onto the next round. 很棒！ *

..but following on from zhen's comment I was thinking how I while I know soccer is not everyone's cup of tea [though you Americans may take more interest now you've had some success ,hey?] ,it's great that you always have these topical lessons so you can get a chance to practice the vocab in the wild while it's being talked about [esp seeing as it is something Chinese are interested in even though there not in the cup...which I find speaks well of their attitude to sport],but also I was thinking how it's great that we now have soccer lessons at virtually every level which may encourage those who have learnt a lesson at their usual level to venture out into the next level ..or even higher ...having some vocab under the belt on that very same topic they may surprise themselves what they can follow at a higher level. So I think this sort of thing once in a while is a good idea.

The idea is the same as what you describe in Australia, and we may bring beer or any other alcohol.

I don't know. I'm certain that soccer is far more popular than baseball in China. Therefore, since China is by far the most populated country in East Asia, East Asia has not chosen baseball. At any rate, it seems that soccer fans have a much larger reputation for fans going absolutely crazy than any other sport, so to say that it merely pleases everyone but isn't extraordinary seems just like your opinion, but not an opinion shared by Europe, South America, Mexico and China + a bunch of other places. Personally, I wouldn't choose soccer to be first, but then again, I would place baseball near the bottom.

"baseball has taken off everywhere it's been seriously introduced. same with cricket"

Cricket has been introduced into the USA - it IS played there. But it has certainly not taken off.

Baseball has been in Australia for years. We had our own national league, which attracted a bit of publicity for a while, but is now defunct. Baseball is dying a slow death in this country - soccer is much more popular here than baseball.

I'm not sure what information you base your claim on.

I would say basketball easily trumps either cricket or baseball worldwide in terms of player and supporter numbers.

Cricket is huge in England and (southern) Wales, less so in Scotland and Ireland. Basketball is a niche sport in the UK, as it is in many other countries I've visited. It's massive popularity in China probably (allied with the large population in the US) maybe does make it the world's second most popular sport (after football/soccer, which I can't ever see losing its crown). For real cricket passion, look to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the island of the Caribbean. And don't forget, cricket's 'introduction' to countries like Australia, India, Kenya, Barbados etc.etc. was bound up intricately with political rule and British colonialism. As such, there is/was an important social element in the growth of the sport. Basketball and baseball's foreign 'introductions' have been largely commercial ventures spurred only by entrepreneurialism and, as such, have been doomed to failure. Er....not really sure what my overall point is, but hope this furthers the debate!!!

At any rate, I'm sure some sports are somehow better than others, but we shouldn't forget why the majority of us like the sports we do, and that's because it is popular in our social circles. In the end, they are all friendly competition wrapped up in different forms.
