kimik, I imagine it would take a lot of White Rabbit candy to poison a person.  Still...

When the story first broke, it was noted that the melamine contamination had been discovered in early August.  Some theorized that Beijing authorities suppressed the news prior to the Olympics.  However, this account places the blame on local Hubei Communist officials who both owned a majority stake in Sanlu and were responsible for regulation... an obvious conflict of interests.

@Tvan, When you spend time in China you may be suspicious of the food locals people eat but most of the time you eat it. That's another story when you're not in China.

According to Wikipedia the acute toxicity of Melamine is quite low but there's a possible chronic toxicity :

Ingestion of melamine may lead to reproductive damage, or bladder or kidney stones, which can lead to bladder cancer.

With some imagination, you can even see a conspiracy theory in it.

Y. Goulnik is the expert here

kimiik, well I'm certainly no expert.  One would think that after the earlier pet food scandal authorities would have focused more on melamine in the food chain, particularly for infants in a one-child society.

kimiik, are you suggesting I'm an expert in conspiracy theory ?-)   I'm not a toxicologist either, the FDA provides data on animal toxicity and risk assessment, but the wikipedia article is quite good, shows that side-effects of melamine have been known for a very long time, also some insights about the melamine market. Nobody in their right mind should even consider ingesting this resin with their food!

Conspiracy theory aside, the CCP and it officials having their hands in so many businesses, such conflicts of interest are only logical, which really calls for independent regulatory / supervisory bodies.
