November 11, 2007, 01:00 PMhmm, wildyak, i'm not sure about the 'zhidao'/'renshi' thing i thought you use 'zhidao' when you want to say you've heard of someone, whereas 'renshi' means 'to know someone' so if kevin wanted to say he's never heard of the man, i think 'zhidao' is right (have to ask someone from Chinesepod to be sure though)

November 11, 2007, 01:21 PMThis is the response from a Chinese friend when I asked her whether to use 认识 or 知道 in this sentence: 你认识 (or should I use 知道?) 后舍男生吗? 应该说"知道",因为知道表示你听说过人家,但是人家不认识你,而"认识"指双方相互的.

November 11, 2007, 02:17 PMThanks Lunetta. I take back what I said, although it still sounds strange in my ears. The explanation makes total sense

November 11, 2007, 04:21 PMSorry about that Kevin. Basically it says to use 知道 when you know a person but that person doesn't know you and 认识 when you know a person and that person knows you as well.

November 11, 2007, 05:49 PMYeah, this is right. I'd say in English, we'd do it like this: 知道 is to know who someone is. 认识 is to know someone.

November 11, 2007, 10:18 AMHey Kevin, I think for people we usually use 认识。 是谁?我不认识他.

November 10, 2007, 01:23 AMThanks, this is cool. I will leave the Republicans for you, don't want to steal your thunder. ;-) Re: Bill Richardson...who cares??? Sorry. I couldn't resist. I've seen 比爾‧李察遜 (bi3er3-li3cha2xun4) I'd like to add: Dennis Kucinich (丹尼斯‧庫辛尼奇) (dan1ni2si1-ku4xing4ni2qi2) [the convention is to put that dot-thingie in between the first and last names] Oh, and I don't think there is an 100% consensus (despite a Taiwan/Mainland divide) I have also seen 奥巴马 for Obama in Mainland sources.
