Verb modification

When using modification as in

漫漫地走 is the verb modified always doubled?  Or is this just coincidental that most times this is so?

Also I'm not sure I'm clear if there is a difference of meaning between this and 走得慢

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

In 慢慢地走,慢慢 is "adverbial modifier", we can use it as a suggestion:别着急,我们慢慢(地)走吧。Do not worry, let's walk slowly.

In 走得慢, 慢 is "complement", we can say: 他走得慢,我们等他吧。He walked slowly, let's wait for him.

When used as an adverbial modifier are the verbs always doubled?

There are a few adj. should be doubled, for example, 慢慢地,轻轻地,重重地,悄悄地,偷偷地,etc.
