Howdy all.. I'm off to Taiwan next year and wanna find out some memorable and photogenic places to visit in the very short week I will be there for. I am going to probably base myself out of Taipei for 3 or 4 days and try to get to the south end of the island for 2 days before returning to Taipei and then returning to Sydney. I've done a little bit of looking around and there are heaps of options but I am hoping some people from here have also travelled there and can give me a heads up on what is actually worth seeing and what isn't..

Also, if you have any Youth Hostels that you really found to be good, would appreciate a heads up on that also.. you can never really tell from the review sites who to trust with their reviews. Some people, who do not speak any mandarin at all or who have never travelled to proper Asian countries feel the service is lacking or the place is too dirty etc

I remember going to a review site after visiting a place that I found absolutely wonderful and seeing all these negative reviews.. so just can't tell.

Go east! Train to Hualien-Taroko Gorge. Or rent a car if you can get a few people together. And parts of the Su Hua Highway most definitely rival California's Pacific Coast Highway for scenery, but there was a serious landslide on it recently so may not be safe or passable. 3 or 4 days in Taipei is more than enough - the National Palace Museum is one of my favorite museums in the world.
