John: Hey guys, I'm John and in this lesson we're talking about shopping, but not just any shopping.
Dilu: 嗯，我们今天要在免税店买东西
John: OK, so that was 'duty free shop', right?
Dilu: 嗯，没错，免税店
John: 免税, that’s 3rd tone, 4th tone, that’s ‘tax-free’, right?
Dilu: 嗯，so for stores it is 店
John: OK, so anyway, in this dialogue we’re about to witness a very Chinese cultural phenomenon, I think.

John: Alright, so the first word we hear in this dialogue is the guy’s name, right?
Dilu: 嗯，他叫林伟，林伟
John: 2nd tone, 3rd tone
Dilu: 嗯
John: Alright, not super important but, uh, what’s this news the girl heard about the guy?
Dilu: 这个女孩子听说他要去美国出差
John: OK, so ‘go to the States on business’
Dilu: 嗯, 听说你要去美国出差
John: OK, now correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t 出差, two 1st tones, isn’t that ‘to go on a business trip’
Dilu: 没错，就是为了工作的事情去其他的地方

John: OK, so we're saying 'go to the United States to go on a business trip', is that right?
Dilu: 啊，对的
John: OK and you don't say 出差去美国, is that right?
Dilu: 嗯，不可以怎么说，你可以说听说你要出差，但是如果要有【第一点】的话要把他放在出差的前面
John: OK, so if you want to add the place where you're going on business put 去 and that place and 出差 otherwise just leave out the place
Dilu: 嗯，没错没错

OK, just twigged what my square-bracket word is above. It should be 地点, which means 'place' or 'location'. Makes much more sense now!

John: Yes, that is the other key word, 代购
Dilu: 代购，对
John: So ‘to buy stuff for people’

John: OK, so if you're saying where you're going for two weeks of training you have to put that before the verb

John: Alright, and that is a theme of today's lesson. We're going to get into that a bit later, but....so go to the place and then do what. OK, so anyway this, uh, going to the States, to the head office, this prompts a request for a favour, right?
