firefox plugin for a PDA

December 15, 2007, 04:01 PM posted in General DiscussionMaybe someone can help me with this question. I'm considering buying a HTC-touch PDA running windows mobile 6 to increase usefulness of this sight. Supposedly I could log on to Chinesepod from anywhere using the device's web functions. My question is this: if I don't read traditional characters and as far as I know there is no firefox available for mobile devices, how can I view chinesepod material in traditional characters directly without firefox?

December 15, 2007, 04:40 PMI only work with simplified characters but I have an HTC TyTN for which I purchased the Opera browser, way better than IE. It's running WM5 thoug; not WM6 which I know PlecoDict has problems with. Anyway, excuter I don't think the issue is ChinesePera-Kun here, more a the plug-in to view GB-encoded characters as traditional (with such little screen real estate, simplified clearly have an advantage!) Also remember that the mobile version of CPod (m.chinespod.com) works really well, full version on such little screens can be messy, even with the best browser. I probably didn't answer the question, just some thoughts.

December 15, 2007, 04:43 PMalso note that the new version of PlecoDict (2.0 will have a document reader that can "read GB/Big5/Unicode Chinese documents from within PlecoDict, tapping on unknown characters to bring up a definition and/or add them to your flashcard lists.", which may address some of your issues.

December 15, 2007, 04:47 PMfinally, if I remember correctly, there is a mobile version of Firefox in the works, which should come out after the release of Firefox v3 (Q1 2008 I guess). It will replace Minimo

December 15, 2007, 05:04 PMthanks for the advice. Yes, what I really want is not a replacement for the mini translator, but a traditional character viewer. guess it sounds like I'll have to wait for the mobile firefox. I wonder if all the plug ins will work the same. It's just as well. I'd probably kill my eyes studying from that little screen anyway.

December 15, 2007, 05:45 PMhmm...but there probably is a replacement for the eastasien language IME available for the windowsmobile-version you have. If you have it installed it should be possible to display the characters in every browser you want. Maybe you find some support at the microsoft pages? Or google it...just some suggestions...

December 15, 2007, 05:55 PMWow, I didn't know about the document reader planned for Pleco 2.0, Goulniky. That, in addition to stroke order and audio (if they are still planning on rolling out those features) should really make it amazing! Can't wait until it's out.

December 15, 2007, 06:01 PMperhaps there is a mobile version of the Acrobat-reader? If so then you should use that.

December 15, 2007, 06:14 PMAcrobat sucks on a mobile, better use the html version. If there is a pdf version in traditional characters, surely there is an html one too

December 15, 2007, 04:21 PMHi, you are probably searching a replacement for ChinesePera-kun right? try the IM-translator (also a firefox-plugin but it works with the internetexplorer as well). it´s not a popup dictionary, but it should work.
