I'll be visiting Shanghai in a matter of weeks. Can anyone recommend a family-friendly hotel that is reasonably central?
Thanks!

Thanks. The foreign language bookstore is just around the corner from us. I'll check it out. We've already sent the unreliable Rough Guide back home. Might find a good Shanghai specific alternative there.
We went to xujiahui the first day to pick up nintendo games for the kids. That was a blast and a great haggling opportunity.

We were hanging around Fuzhou Rd. and the Foreign Languages Bookstore a lot. They have a lot of books downstairs catering for foreigners learning Chinese. Upstairs you can find some licensed reprints of academic books from the US, UK etc. which come quite inexpensive. Don't forget to pick up some of the listings journals like Shanghai Talk, That's Shanghai etc. They are either for free or affordably priced (for foreigners) at 28 RMB or something. You get them at the biggers hotels and in venues at Xintiandi etc. If you are into computers you can go to Xujiahui - if only to experience the atmosphere. Nver forget the Shanghai museam on people's square and ... I could go on quite some time :-)

skip the bar then and hit the pearl tower next door. Same view but you have to buy a ticket. You can take a boat ride on the river from the bund, the kids might like that. There is a zoo but I have never been inside except to eat at the restaurant which was good. There is an aquarium, not my thing but the kids may enjoy. bazza shared pictures.

@rj: the bar might have to wait for another time, given I have two young daughters in tow.
@amber: sounds great. We plan to call in tomorrow morning, so see you then.

I like the back alleys of Taikang Lu, it's near the Cpod factory. I can direct you there after your tour of Cpod! Everyone also seems to love the Urban Planning Museum, which has a full on scale 3D map of every building in Shanghai. Walking around the French Concession is great, and there are a ton of other cool old neighbourhoods that are great for exploring, including the old Jewish quarter.

That's me alright. I have a lot of new entries to make over the next few days. Any suggestions for Shanghai activities? Rough Guide not great.

Just checked in to Seventh Heaven on Nanjing Dong Lu. Radisson was waaaaaaay out of my budget. Here for a week with family. Hope to call round to CP friends (that's Chinesepod I mean, in case, you know, you think I meant, you know...oh never mind)

The Radisson New World is superbly located at the end of Nanjing Lu, right on People's Square. Your wife will get all the retail therapy she wants!

If it's not yet closed for refurbishing, the historic art deco, over-priced, and sometimes dirty Peace Hotel (和平饭店) is in the middle of everything. See your room before you pay.

Wa have stayed at the Yangtze Hotel a year ago which is quite near to people's square, Nanjing lu etc. It dates from years back but has been fully refurbished. You have a computer with internet access in your room (for an extra fee). Although, I couldn't use it very much at the times as the communication cable in the pacific ocean was damaged.
You will be very near to shops, Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leave etc. Thus, retail therapy will be a breeze.
Try https://www.ratestogo.com/hotel.asp?HotelID=20356&preview=-1 for availability etc.

I'll also be in Shanghai soon and I would appreciate more hotel suggestions if anyone out there wants to recommend more. Broadband internet is the only real 'must have' for me.
Brendan i had a thread on hotels a while back that you might want to dig up. Some people gave some good suggestions.

Hi RJ - 4 star would be cool. And I'm happy to fool myself into thinking that I'll be OK even if there's no english spoken. The main thing is location - we'll be at the end of a 3 week trip of China and I think my wife will need some retail therapy :-)

brendan - there are so many. What class of hotel are you interested in (2star, 4 star, 5star?). Do you require that the staff mostly speak english or is a completely Chinese hotel ok?
