Question about the use of 已

In what way does the use of 已 alter the translation of the following sentence:

对于现代的人来说，同性恋已不是什么新潮词汇了。

Is it possible to leave it out altogether, and if so, would it change the meaning?

Furthermore, could I say 已经？
