Dilu: 今天呢我们是在一个restaurant里面
John: And so we have a couple that are eating, but there is a problem, right?
Dilu: 啊，because there are people, 啊，因为他们旁边有一个人在吃面
John: OK, so someone next to them is eating noodles, what’s the problem?
Dilu: 而且声音很大
John: Ah, so the noise is really loud
Dilu: 哈哈

John: OK, so uh how do we kick-off this dialogue, what does the guy say?
Dilu: 怎么不吃了，怎么不吃了
John: OK, now this 怎么 is not “how”, right?
Dilu: 嗯，是问她为什么，why
John: Yeah, how come you’re not eating
Dilu: 对
John: OK, so 不吃，not eat, but then why is there a 了 on the end?
Dilu: 啊因为刚才在吃现在不吃
John: So she was eating, now she’s not eating, so there has been a change of state
Dilu: That’s right
John: So this 不吃了 is almost like stop eating

John: Like not eating any more, right?
Dilu: 对举一个例子你可以说，诶你怎么不说了，怎么不说了
John: So, why aren’t you talking any more
Dilu: 对
John: Like why did you suddenly get quiet, that kind of thing?
Dilu: 对，还有你可能会听到小贝贝他说，我不玩了
John: So, I’m not playing any more, I’m not playing with you any more， that kind of thing?
Dilu: 嗯，对，我不玩了
John: I see. Alright, so it’s a change of state with 了. And then the girl says what now?

Dilu: 我吃不下，我吃不下
John: OK, so in 吃不下 this 不下 is a complement that tells us something extra about 吃， so in this case what’s going on exactly with the 吃
Dilu: Well most of the time when people say 我吃不下了 means, like, I’m full 我吃饱了，我不可以再吃了
John: OK, so I can’t eat any more
Dilu: 嗯，但是在这里呢啊是不要吃，不想吃
John: Right, she just can’t bring herself to eat any more
Dilu: 是的

Dilu: 对，我吃不下，吃不下
John: OK, and the reason is?
Dilu: 旁边那个人吃面条声音太大了，旁边那个人吃面条声音太大了
John: So the sound of him eating noodles is too loud. Um, but at the beginning of the sentence we have 旁边那个人，so next to us that person
Dilu: 就是旁边那个人the person next to us
