John: In southern China its especially cold in the winter.

John: So 取暖 literally means 'get warm'.
Dilu: 对。就是想办法让自己热一点。

Dilu: 对。然后她还说：这该死的空调一点都不给力，我都快冻死了。
John: Let's take it piece by piece. What kind of air conditioner?
Dilu: 这该死的空调。该死的空调。
John: 该死的 literally means 'should die'.
Dilu: 对。Literally.
John: And its often used as a translation for 'damned'. Like 'this damn air conditioner'.
Dilu: 就是这个空调不太好用。
John: So this can be used with all kinds of things that are annoying you.

John: But you don't want him to hear you saying that, right?
Dilu: 那当然不行了。

John: So "it doesn't at all 给力".
Dilu: 不给力。
John: 给力 - 3rd and 4th. 不给力 - what does that mean?
Dilu: 不给力是一个比较新的一个中文词汇。现在就是常常会用来说：没有达到一定的要求和作用。
John: So 不给力 is like 'it doesn't do what its supposed to do'.
Dilu: 诶，是的。
John: Or it doesn't do what you want it to.

John: 冻, 4th tone, that means 'to freeze'.
Dilu: 是的。第四声。
John: So "I'm even about to freeze". How do we say that?
Dilu: 我都快冻死了。我都快冻死了。
John: 冻死了 literally means 'to freeze to death'.
Dilu: 对。当然是有一些夸奖的说法。
John: A little bit exaggerated. And 冷死了 just means 'so cold', 'I'm going to die from cold'.
Dilu: 对的，对的。但是冻死了感觉更加的冷。
John: So 冻死了 is even colder than 冷死了, both useful phrases in China in the winter.
