Dilu: 所以说你还是要改[着]你的证件,去柜台,领取你的银行卡,是吧。
John: Right, that happened to me twice.
Dilu: 真麻烦。
John: I'm very forgetful. Both times I left the card in the machine. Luckily no-one came up behind me and took all my money.
Dilu: 你真的很幸运。
John: I think some banks in China are a lot better about dealing with this than others. We're interested in hearing your experiences. If your 银行卡被ATM机吞过,we'd like to hear about your experience on ChinesePod.com.
Dilu: 好的。那我们今天的课先到这里,下次再见。
John: 再见。

Dilu: John, 我问你啊。你的银行卡有没有被ATM机吞过?
John: 被ATM机吞过。有。
Dilu: 然后你有没有打电话给银行?
John: 有。
Dilu: 然后他们有没有帮你呢?
John: 有。但是我[?]去银行的柜台领取。
Dilu: 你没有这个女孩子这钟special treatment。
John: No I'm not a cute girl asking a guy for help. I basically had to go for a few days without a bank card and borrow money. I didn't have to 赶飞机, so I was OK I guess.

Dilu: 一般都会说:派谁做什么。
John: In this case 'send employee to have a look'. What's another example of using 派?
Dilu: 比如说:公司派你去中国出差。
John: So 'the company sends you to China on business'.
Dilu: 对啊。
John: Got it. Anyway at the end, it looks like she's going to get some help pretty quickly. Happy ending.
Dilu: 对啊。这个男的还是比较helpful的。
John: Let's listen to the dialog one more time, then we have a few other things to say.
Dilu: 好的。

March 04, 2013 at 07:21 AM
John: So 'which bank?'
Dilu: 是的。
John: And then ...
Dilu: 然后:我们派工作人员去看看。派工作人员去看看。
John: So this verb 派, 4th tone, it means 'to send someone to do something'.
Dilu: 对。
John: And its frequently related to work.
Dilu: 是的。
John: So first send whom?
Dilu: 工作人员。工作人员。
John: Its kind of long, but it just means 'employee'.
Dilu: 对。
John: A worker. 工作人员, 1st and 4th - 工作, and then 人员 is 2nd, 2nd.

John: This word 网点 is two 3rd tones. The characters are 'net point'. So I looked this up and it says 'node'. And it makes you think, maybe they're talking about the network, an IP address, but that's not the case.
Dilu: 不是不是不是。它指的是:你在哪个银行?就是:你在哪里?
John: So basically 'which branch of the bank in their network'. This is also a 网点.
Dilu: 是的。很多的银行都会用这个词。

Dilu: 可是这个女的她说:我来不及去借钱。
John: 来不及 - don't have time to do something.
Dilu: 对。
John: And the tones are ...
Dilu: 第二声,轻声,和第二声。
John: 2nd, neutral, 2nd. 来不及.
Dilu: 对。
John: So she's pleading here again - 麻烦你帮帮我.
Dilu: 麻烦你帮帮我,我来不及去借钱。
John: So 'no time to go borrow money'. So then the guy starts to actually try to help her. What does he ask?
Dilu: 他说:你在哪个网点?你在哪个网点?

11:03
Dilu: 你可以理解它是一个'也'like 'also',但是呢我觉得这里是一个语气的[feng he]。
John: So its kind of softening the tone. Instead of just saying 没有办法, 'like' 'sorry, we can't really do anything about it', its a little bit softer.
Dilu: 对。我觉得是语气。
John: So don't worry about this 也 too much. Its the kind of thing you need to hear a lot to get a feel for.

March 03, 2013 at 08:12 AM
10:32
John: So the verb again?
Dilu: 处理。处理。
John: Two 3rd tones.
Dilu: 对。
John: But actually occasionally you hear 4th-3rd.
Dilu: 我经常说 chùlǐ.
John: But in the dictionary its chǔlǐ. Both are OK. Two 3rd tones.
Dilu: 都可以。
John: 'Could I trouble you to please take care of this for me'. And then the guy says ...
Dilu: 不好意思,我们也没有办法。我们也没有办法。
John: So 'there's nothing we can do either' ? Is this 也 also 'either'?
Right-Wingnut
March 03, 2013 at 08:05 AM
10:02
Dilu: 对。
John: 好吧。You'll notice there's no 'please' in there. Often Chinese people when they're being polite or they're urgently requesting something, you don't hear 'please', you just hear other things like 麻烦你 and 好吗, right?
Dilu: 对。麻烦你也是非常非常的客气,非常礼貌。
John: So her tone here is kind of pleading.
Dilu: 有点像是在求他。
John: So in English people like 'please, please', but in Chinese they're not like (??) 请请, they use 麻烦你.
Dilu: 没有没有。麻烦你现在处理一下,好吗?

March 03, 2013 at 07:53 AM

Dilu: 没错。就是时间很少。
John: So she's about to leave to catch a plane.
Dilu: 对。马上要赶飞机。
John: She's not quite in a rush yet but she will be very shortly.
Dilu: 对啊。也就是说她马上就要走了。
John: If she can get her card back and her money right away, then she can still make the plane.
Dilu: 对的。
John: OK.
Dilu: 然后呢她又说:麻烦你现在处理一下,好吗?麻烦你现在处理一下,好吗?
John: So 'can I trouble you right now to take care of this'.

John: So after an earthquake the people really urgently need help.
Dilu: 对。
John: So on the news you hear that kind of thing. So you wouldn't be like (is this English?) 我现在急需咖啡,and you get coffee.
Dilu: 这个不是很自然。
John: So its more formal and more serious.
Dilu: 对。
John: But then she's told that at the earliest she can get it tomorrow, and then she says what?
Dilu: 她说她马上要赶飞机。马上要赶飞机。
John: So 赶飞机 is to rush to catch a plane.
Right-Wingnut
March 03, 2013 at 07:40 AM
8:29
John: And what is 急需?
Dilu: 急需就是很急得需要。
John: So you urgently need, you urgently require.
Dilu: 对。
John: 急需. So that's 2nd tone and 1st tone.
Dilu: 是的。第二声和第一声。那这个词也是比较正式。
John: Kind of formal.
Dilu: 这个词我们常常会在新闻里面看到。比如说:There's an earthquake in some kind of place, and then you will see titles like 急需帮助。

John: So its the counter in the bank closest to the ATM.
Dilu: 好像是吧。
John: Yes the sentence orders in Chinese and English are pretty different. Let's hear that one more time.
Dilu: 离ATM机最近的那个银行的柜台。
John: Got it. But the girl doesn't like this solution, right?
Dilu: 因为她马上就要出差了,急需现金。
John: So she's about to go on a business trip, and she what?
Dilu: 急需现金。
John: So 现金 is cash.
Dilu: 对。
Right-Wingnut
March 03, 2013 at 07:25 AM
7:32
Dilu: We need to break it down.
John: So the simplified answer is ...
Dilu: 银行的柜台。银行的柜台。
John: So 'the counter in the bank'. And the part before 银行 is telling us which bank.
Dilu: 对。是哪一个银行呢?是离ATM机最近的那个银行。
John: So 'the bank closest to the ATM'.
Dilu: 对。这个句子听上去有一点长。
Right-Wingnut
March 03, 2013 at 07:17 AM
7:01
Dilu: 没错。听上去更加serious。
John: So you 带 your 证件, and you prove your identity so you can 领取.
Dilu: Good mix of the language.
John: So then the question is ...
Dilu: 哪个柜台?
John: Which counter? The answer might sound a little confusing at first, so what's the answer?
Dilu: 离ATM机最近的那个银行的柜台。
John: So the answer is telling us which 柜台, but its kind of long.
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 09:19 AM
6:29
John: Its a special counter for reclaiming your bank card.
Dilu: You wish.
John: That would be nice. So go to the 柜台 and do what?
Dilu: 领取。领取。
John: This is a verb, two 3rd tones, and what does this mean?
Dilu: 领取要[比]拿。会更加正式一些,因为你要拿你的ID,你的哪个证件,才可以取,拿这个东西。
John: So 领取 basically just means 'get', but its more formal. You have to claim it, you have to prove your identity before you get it.
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 09:09 AM
John: So 'take your 证件 and go' where?
Dilu: 去柜台。柜台。第四声和第二声。
John: 柜台 is like a counter in some kind of formal place.
Dilu: 就一定要是有工作人员的那个服务台。
John: Some kind of service counter. So they're referring to one of the counters at the bank.
Dilu: 对。
John: And is the kind of thing you need to get a number for, and they'll call your number, and then you go to the counter.
Dilu: 对对对。
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 09:03 AM
5:31
Dilu: 没错。就是一个结果。
John: So then the bank employee tells her what she needs to do.
Dilu: 他的solution就是:你明天带证件去柜台领取。明天带证件去柜台领取。
John: So 证件, two 4th tones, that's some kind of ID?
Dilu: 是的。你的身份证。
John: Your ID card or maybe if you're a foreigner it could be your passport.
Dilu: 是的。
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 08:58 AM
Dilu: 对。
John: In this case its just 输, 1st tone.
Dilu: 是的。第一声。输。
John: But she did it incorrectly, so its ...
Dilu: 输错。输错。
John: 'Input incorrectly'. And the word for PIN is ...
Dilu: 密码。密码。第四声和第三声。
John: So same as 'password', right?
Dilu: 对。
John: And then after that happened, the result was ...
Dilu: 卡就被吞了。卡就被吞了。
John: So this 就 is telling us 'the result was this'.
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 08:53 AM
4:29
John: And this 的, the 是...的, is for asking details about the past.
Dilu: 没错。
John: Then we get the answer. How was it eaten?
Dilu: 我输错了几次密码,卡就被吞了。我输错了几次密码。
John: So she got her PIN wrong a couple of times. So when you put in your password, your PIN, what's the verb for that?
Dilu: 你可以说:输or输入。
John: 输入, that means 'input'.
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 08:48 AM
4:03
Dilu: 对。他说:怎么吞的?怎么吞的?
John: So 'how was it eaten?' Why is there a 的 here? 怎么吞的?
Dilu: 这里是一个是...的pattern。
John: OK, so its a 是...的 structure, but the 是 isn't there. So if it was there, then the full structure, what would it be?
Dilu: 是怎么吞的?是怎么吞的?
John: Like '你的卡是怎么吞的?'
Dilu: Exactly.
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 08:43 AM
3:31
John: So 'swallow it down'.
Dilu: 对。
John: So 吞下去 for swallowing some food or liquid. And then if its a machine, besides an ATM machine, do other machines eat stuff. What if a vending machine takes your money and doesn't give you anything?
Dilu: 对啊。那个也叫吞。就是你的钱被这个vending machine吞了。
John: So that's also 被吞了.
Dilu: 但是没有吃的东西[出来]。(What does 出来 mean here?)
John: You didn't get what you wanted. So then the bank employee on the other end of the phone asks a question.
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 08:36 AM
Dilu: 被。被something吞了。
John: So 'by the ATM machine, was eaten'.
Dilu: 对。
John: But getting back to 吞, this verb. You said it means 'swallow'. So we can use it for food?
Dilu: 可以呀。它就是一个动作。
John: But just like in English, you don't use the word 'swallow' all the time when you mean 'eat'. You're only going to use it in special circumstances. Like a kid won't take their medicine, and you tell him 'swallow it, swallow it'.
Dilu: 对对对。
John: How do you say that?
Dilu: 你可以说:吞下去。吞下去。
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 08:30 AM
2:32
John: So first off we have the verb which means 'to get swallowed up', 'to be eaten' by the machine, and that verb is ...
Dilu: 吞。吞。第一声。
John: TUN, 1st tone. 吞 is not a syllable you hear a lot.
Dilu: 对。这个吞就是英文里的swallow。
John: The machine swallowed the card. But here we have a passive structure. It was eaten BY the ATM. So the word used for this passive structure is ...

March 02, 2013 at 08:26 AM
1:59
John: So its a young lady who has the problem, and in the first line of the dialog we hear the problem as she starts talking to someone on the other end of the phone.
Dilu: 是的。她说:我的银行卡被ATM机吞了,怎么办?
John: So she uses the word 'bank card'. How do we say that?
Dilu: 银行卡。银行卡。
John: 2nd, 2nd, 3rd.
Dilu: 对。
John: And then 'was eaten by the ATM'. How do we say that?
Dilu: 被ATM机吞了。被ATM机吞了。
Right-Wingnut
March 02, 2013 at 07:29 AM
0:28
John: John: We do that in English too with 'Pin Number' and stuff. But anyway, today we're going to have a problem at the ATM. The card is going to get eaten. So the challenge you have listening to this dialog is try to figure out what the verb is when the card gets eaten.
Dilu: 对。还有就是:这个问题发生了以后,你可以做什么?
John: What do you do. You don't just talk to the ATM. That's not what this dialog is between in this dialog???? You call the number that's on the ATM ...
Dilu: 对。
John: ... and you try to get someone to help you. We'll see how it goes.
Dilu: 好。那我们先听一下对话。
