John: Hey guys, you're listening to ChinesePod, my name is John Pasden, and this is an Intermediate lesson.
John: Today we have a very unlikely story about an airplane and a snake of all things.
Dilu: A snake on the plane.
John: 好。
Dilu:
John:
Dilu: 对。
John: 蛇 is 'snake'.
Dilu:
John: That one's easy, that's 'plane'.
John: 好。

Dilu:
John: 'The plane is about to take off'. How do we say that?
Dilu:
Do we need all those words in there to express this?

John: So you don't need every single one of those words, but putting them all together makes it really clear that the is about to take off.
Dilu:
John: The word for 'take-off' ...
Dilu:
John: 3rd and 1st. Pick yourself up and fly, right?
Dilu:
Dilu:

John: 1, 2, 4. And the word for 'to fasten' is ...
Dilu: 系。系。
John: 系 is 4th tone, JI.
Dilu:
John: That's what I wanted to ask you. Could you just say
John: So you usually don't just say 系, you have to add a 系好 or a 系上. Got it. That's just the way it is said. And then what happens next?

Dilu:
John: Two 4th tones. So what did he say when he sees the kid in his seat?
Dilu:
John: 我的座位 means 'my seat'. So what is this 靠窗的?
Dilu:

John: The seat on the window, the seat next to the window. 靠 means 'be right next to'.
Dilu: 对。
John: 4th tone. And the window, of course 窗, is 1st tone.
Dilu:
John: So that was omitted. So 'the window one', 'the window seat'. So the kid's in his seat, and then what does the mother say?
Dilu:

John: So 'could you let him sit in the window seat?'
Dilu:
John: Sit in the window seat. Got it. So then he agrees to that, but the mother has even another request.
John: So she means 'put the bag onto the rack'. Its not really a rack - the overhead compartment.

Dilu:
John: 2nd, neutral, 4th.
John: Could you say
Dilu:
John: But the 到 kind of emphasises its moving from one place to another.
Dilu:
John: He tries, but something goes wrong. What does he say?
