John: 淘宝.
Jenny: 对。网上买了东西。
John: Now that my wife and I have a baby, we order much of the stuff online.

Jenny: John,其实在中国我觉得可能四五年前,快递还是,怎么说,不是很common,不是很[强健]的一个服务。
John: But nowadays 快递 is everywhere.
Jenny: 而且,[小?]办公室一天有可能有十个快递,对不对。
John: Ten packages every day.
Jenny: Are they all for you?

John: So 'in a while I have to go out'.
Jenny: 对。那 In a while 这里就是'待会儿'。待会儿。
John: Isn't there a 等一会儿?
Jenny: 对。等一会儿也可以,待会儿也可以。
John: They're basically the same.
Jenny: 对。就是 in a while 的意思。
John: So you're not literally waiting or staying, you're just saying 'in a little while'.
Jenny: 对。
John: OK, got it.
Jenny: 所以中国人都是说 excuse 的 master。The master of excuses。

March 29, 2013 at 07:50 AM
10:36
John: 要不 is when you preface a suggestion.
Jenny: 就是 why don't you do this? 要不。
John: 让物业. So 物业, two 4th tones, that's the property management.
Jenny: 对的。
John: Basically the guards in the complex.
Jenny: 是的。
John: House.
Jenny: 物业这个词,如果你住在中国,住在apartment[你每年]很常用。要不你让物业帮你收吧,我待会儿也要出去。我待会儿也要出去。

March 29, 2013 at 07:41 AM
Jenny: 这是:我买的是蓝色的。
John: So that's also the confirming that it should be this way.
Jenny: 对。Should be blue。我买的是蓝色的。如果颜色不对,也不要签收。
John: OK.
Jenny: 好。
John: And this is where the friend says OK, this is a little too complicated.
Jenny: [她friend就被有out了。]因为这个人太烦了。
John: You'll notice the Chinese very subtle indirect way of [??being?? - surely its 'saying'] 'I'm not doing this'.
Jenny: 对。然后[?]就是基本上 lie。 Make up an excuse。她说:要不你让物业帮你收吧。要不你让物业帮你收吧。

Jenny: 对。
John: So that's what lights do.
Jenny: 是的。看看亮不亮啊。
John: So we're referring to the 灯.
Jenny: 对。它这个怎么是用电池的?可能是很小的。
John: A desk light for [that uses??] batteries.
Jenny: 好。那她接下来呢[又让]她的朋友看颜色,对不对啊。反正这是乱七八糟有很多的要求,很多的requirements。
John: You'll notice here we also use that same 是...的.

8:59
John: So 装 can be 'to try to install', 'to start to install' or 'put in', but if you've totally done it ...
Jenny: ... finished ...
John: ... then its a result. Its like 送到.
Jenny: 对。其实这个'装'versus'装上',就很像'送'versus'送到'。
John: So 装 is try to install it, try to put them in, but if you 装上 you've totally succeeded in getting the batteries in.
Jenny: 对的。
John: OK.
Jenny: 好。那我们要装上电池,然后看看这个台灯亮不亮。看亮不亮。
John: So 亮, 4th tone, is a verb which means 'to light up'.
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 07:11 AM
8:33
John: 装上电池. So 电池 - 4th tone, 2nd tone - are batteries.
Jenny: Yes. 那装上电池。
John: The verb there is 装.
Jenny: 对。这个'装'就是put it in,[扎]。
John: Install, sometimes.
Jenny: 对的对的。
John: 1st tone, 装. So why is there a 上 there?
Jenny: 这个装上电池呢,就是说:把电池装进去。[都弄好。]

March 29, 2013 at 07:02 AM
8:01
Jenny: 没错。
John: OK.
Jenny: 好。那接下来呢,她说她买了个台灯,对不对。台灯。
John: 灯 is a light.
Jenny: 那台灯[呢]就是放在桌子上,台子上的。
John: So its a desk lamp.
Jenny: 台灯。台灯。
John: The tones are ...
Jenny: 第二声和第一声。
John: 2nd, 1st. 台灯. OK.
Jenny: 好。接下来她让小皮,让她的朋友打开还要装上电池。

March 29, 2013 at 06:53 AM
Jenny: 这里呢其实:是怎么怎么样的它也是个pattern。就是一种,怎么说,很肯定的。
John: So if the outer packaging is good ...
Jenny: Is indeed intact.
John: You've confirmed that its good: 是好的.
Jenny: 对,对。
John: This use of 是 with the 的 just makes it seem more definite.
Jenny: 没错。
John: OK.
Jenny: 如果外包装是好的,就打开看看。
John: So if it doesn't look beat up, you open it up, and then you look at the actual product.
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 06:47 AM
7:01
John: So this is used pretty often for accepting a delivery, I'm taking it.
Jenny: 没错。
John: OK.
Jenny: 好。[等啊]是instruction number 1.
John: That wasn't too bad.
Jenny: 那接下来呢她说:如果外包装是好的,就打开看看。所以我们又有这个:如果怎么怎么样,就怎么怎么样的pattern。
John: In this case, if the outer packaging ...
Jenny: ...是好的...
John: ...is good. Why don't we just say 如果包装好?
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 06:39 AM
6:31
John: Torn or beaten up. OK. So if its totally beaten up, then ...
Jenny: 就不要签收。就不要签收。
John: Now is this 收 the same one we were just talking about?
Jenny: 对。就是收快递,对吧。想麻烦你帮我收一下。那签收呢就是说:你又要签名,然后呢再收下。
John: So sign it and receive it.
Jenny: 对。
John: So those are two 1st tones.
Jenny: 是的。签收。签收。
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 06:33 AM
6:02
Jenny: 好。那我们看看if什么happens啊。如果破了。破了。
John: 破, 4th tone, that means 'to break', 'to tear','to rip'.
Jenny: 对。就是看那个context。那这里外包装,我刚刚说一般就是那个什么plastic bag,对吧,[?]一个box。
John: Or a cardboard box with a bunch of packing tape around it.
Jenny: 对。所以,如果这个这些东西破了,那一般是它,怎么说,beaten up,或者torn。
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 06:22 AM
Jenny: 对。
John: And then its in a box ...
Jenny: 是的。
John: ... which is also taped up.
Jenny: 对对对。
John: So which one does the 外包装 refer to?
Jenny: 最外面的那个。
John: The box with the tape around it.
Jenny: 或者那个plastic bag。
John: OK.
Jenny: 那要先看看外包装好不好,如果破了就不要签收。如果破了就不要签收。
John: So we have a pattern here. 如果 ...
Jenny: ... something ...
John: ... and then 就
Jenny: 对的。
John: So if this happens, then do this.
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 06:16 AM
5:02
John: Isn't packaging always on the outside?
Jenny: 对啊。但是我们也说:外包装。因为她这里说的就是:比如大家在中国收快递,可能这个东西外面有一个盒子啊。
John: Like a box.
Jenny: 对。但是这个盒子外面快递公司还会包一个袋子,一个塑料袋。
John: OK [bald] so you wrap it.
Jenny: 对。
John: So the actual thing you ordered is in its original packaging, and then its wrapped.
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 05:13 AM
Jenny: 先看看外包装好不好。先看看外包装好不好。
John: So first take a look if the what is good or not?
Jenny: The 外包装。外包装。
John: Now 包装 is a word.
Jenny: 对。包装就是packaging的意思。
John: 包装, that's two 1st tones.
Jenny: 对。那前面还有一个字:外。外包装。
John: So 'outer packaging'.
Jenny: 你觉得Chinese很redundant,对吧。Packaging就是在外面的。

March 29, 2013 at 05:07 AM
4:01
Jenny: 麻烦你帮我收一下。
John: Note that this 收 is 1st tone, its not that 4th tone one. Its 1st tone.
Jenny: 对对对。这个是第一声。收。
John: When you talk about receiving objects, physical objects, you use the 1st tone 收.
Jenny: 收。好的。她们应该是roommates啊。
John: OK.
Jenny: 然后这个小皮就说:好的。然后the fun begins。
John: Here is where all the specific instructions start. What does the friend say?
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 05:00 AM
3:32
John: Hold on a second. 有事回不去 means 'can't go back'.
Jenny: 对。
John: 回不去 is 回去 and then 回不去.
Jenny: 对。对。
John: Can't go back. OK. So I want to bother you to ...
Jenny: 帮我收一下。帮我收一下。
John: 'Help me to accept it'.
Jenny: 对的,to receive it, to sign it.
John: So in this case, receiving it also involves signing, which comes up later.
Jenny: 对的。
John: 帮我收一下。
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 04:54 AM
John: So 送 means 'to send', and means it has been sent and it has arrived.
Jenny: 对。所以'送到'就是一个完整的,一个completed动作。
John: What if we just said 到, would that be OK?
Jenny: 也可以。我有一个快递,今天会到。
John: Its just natural to use 送 with 快递.
Jenny: 没错。
John: So we use 送到.
Jenny: 好。但是呢,我今天有事回不去。所以想麻烦你帮我收一下。想麻烦你帮我收一下。
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 04:46 AM
2:41
John: I have a package - this refers to a package.
Jenny: 对。快递。今天会送到。
John: And its going to arrive today.
Jenny: 送到。对。
John: 送 means 'to deliver', 'to send'. What's going on here?
Jenny: 这个'到'我们知道就是'到达'- arrive - 的意思。
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 04:42 AM
2:02
John: The friend's name is what?
Jenny: 小皮。小皮。
John: 皮. Is that a surname?
Jenny: 对。这是一个比较rare比较少见的姓。
John: 皮, 2nd tone.
Jenny: 对。小皮。小皮说:怎么了?怎么了?
John: You probably know 怎么了 as meaning 'what's the matter', 'what's wrong', but notice that it can also just mean 'what's up', 'what's going on'.
Jenny: 对。Less dramatic.
John: OK.
Jenny: 怎么了?怎么了?然后呢,这个朋友,很烦的朋友,就说:我有一个快递今天会送到。我有一个快递今天会送到。

Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 04:29 AM
Jenny: And also, a physical package.
John: So its everything.
Jenny: 对。
John: And the tones for 快递 are ...
Jenny: 快递。是两个第四声,对吧。
John: 4-4.
Jenny: 快递。但是今天你要麻烦别人帮你收一下。
John: So you're going to get other people to go to the trouble of accepting your package.
Jenny: So be nice to them.
John: Let's find out what happens.
Jenny: 好。
Right-Wingnut
March 29, 2013 at 04:24 AM
