John: We won't force you to represent all of the gyms in 上海。Fair enough.
Dilu: 然后我也不太经常去健身房。
John: But I've heard lots of stuff like this, so if you guys, you listeners, have any experiences you'd like to share with us, please come to ChinesePod.com and let us know.
Dilu: 好的。Looking forward to your comments.
John: All right, see you.
Dilu: 下次再见。
John: 再见。

John: 有道德。
Dilu: 就是不太缺德这些人。
John: So they're moral people that go to the gyms.
Dilu: 因为他们会把锻炼好的东西放回去,然后会真整理好。
John: So you think most people are good, most people 不缺德。
Dilu: 当然我去,我只去一家健身房,所以我也不太情趣其他的健身房会不会乱七八糟的。

Dilu: 谁跟你说啊?这家健身房乱七八糟的?
John: Many people. Including people you know.
Dilu: 啊?Including people I know? 他们是不是比较 picky 啊。
John: So you think its fine?
Dilu: 其实很多人 ...其实很多健身房不是特别整齐,但是大部分的人还比较有[道德]。

John: Dilu, let me ask you a question.
Dilu: 什么问题?
John: True or false. 上海的健身房乱七八糟的?
Dilu: 啊?为什么呀?你有没有去过健身房?
John: Whoa. True or false.
Dilu: False.
John: Really?
Dilu: 你为什么会这么说呢?
John: I don't go to a gym anymore, but I hear lots of stories about 乱七八糟的健身房 in 上海。

Dilu: 是的。
John: This one's a little tricky in Chinese, because in English we like to say 'I broke my arm', 'I broke my leg'. But in Chinese you don't say that, you say 'my arm bone broke'.
Dilu: 对。你会说:手骨折了。或者是:脚骨折了。
John: So 'my foot bone broke'.
Dilu: 对。不会说:我的脚坏了。
John: So just to make that clear, if you want to say a bone broke, you say ...
Dilu: 骨折。骨折。
John: [??] 骨折了。(why so soft?)
Dilu: 骨折了。骨折了。

John: Help an old granny cross the street. So you're actually supporting her with your hands.
Dilu: 对。就是扶着她过马路。
John: So be on the lookout for this verb 扶。We don't really use it in English but its pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it.
Dilu: 对。那最后他们说:不会骨折了吧?不会骨折了吧?
John: 骨折 means 'bone breaks'.

John: In English we say 'let me help you up', and you might want to say 我帮你起来,but in Chinese you don't really say 帮,you use this special verb which means 'to support with one's hands'.
Dilu: 对。其实也是'帮',但是我们的动词更加多一点嘛。
John: So Chinese has an extra verb just for this.
Dilu: 对。
John: So the verb is ...
Dilu: 扶。扶。第二声。
John: 2nd tone. So 扶你起来 means 'I'll use my hands to help you get up'.
Dilu: 对。就是 to support you. 我们常常也会说:扶老奶奶过马路。

July 19, 2013 at 08:22 AM
John: So 'stop being so angry', 'calm down'.
Dilu: 你也可以说:别生气了。但是我们有的时候会说:气死我了。
John: 气死我了。That's 'I'm really angry'.
Dilu: 但是不会说:生气死我了。对吧。
John: But here you can say 别气了 or 别生气了,they're both correct.
Dilu: 这里两个都可以。
John: So then he says what?
Dilu: 我扶你起来吧。我扶你起来吧。

July 19, 2013 at 08:15 AM
Dilu: 是的。
John: But ...
Dilu: 别的也一样,这种人哪里都有。今天真倒霉。
John: 'Today I'm really unlucky'. The word for 'unlucky' is ...
Dilu: 倒霉。倒霉。第三声第二声。
John: 3rd - 2nd. Then the guy tries to calm her down. What does he say?
Dilu: 别气了。别气了。
John: 别气了。This 气,is that the same as 生气?
Dilu: 对。就是生气的意思。

Dilu: 对。以后我们去别家吧。去别家。
John: What is 别家?Someone else's home?
Dilu: 不是别人家。是指其他的健身房。
John: So this 家 is a measure word for gyms.
Dilu: 对。我们会说:一家健身房和其他家的健身房。
John: So suggesting going to another gym.
Right-Wingnut
July 19, 2013 at 08:06 AM
6:37
John: So the gym is a mess. How did they say that?
Dilu: 这个健身房乱七八糟的。乱七八糟的。
John: Its kind of chaotic, its not well organised.
Dilu: 对。这边有一个'的'。其实是省略了一个字。乱七八糟的样子。
John: The 的 might seem a little strange there, but really it omits the idea, the 样子。So its totally messy, you can tell just by looking at it how disorganised it is.

5:32
Dilu: 这个'害得'就是因为一切什么事情。然后会有不好的结果。
John: So it negatively impacts someone.
Dilu: 对。
John: So when someone uses too much of the equipment, other people can't use it. You put this 害得 before 'the other people can't use it'.
Dilu: 对。害得别人没东西练。
John: So you're telling the bad result, and its usually a part of blaming someone.
Dilu: 然后他们做了一个 conclusion。他们说:这个健身房乱七八糟的,以后我们去别家吧。

Dilu: John's favourite example is: 要么加班,要么明天不要来了。
John: Either work overtime, or don't bother coming in tomorrow. Very useful.
Dilu: John 是一个很厉害的老板。
John: 谢谢。Let's continue the sentence though. 要么 this, 要么 that. What was the second part?
Dilu: 害得别人没东西练。害得别人没东西练。
John: Either they don't put it back, or they take too much,害得别人没东西练。

John: 受不了 means 'can't stand'.
Dilu: 对。然后她又说:要么不放回去,要么一个人拿很多,害得别人没东西练。
John: So we've got this pattern going on here. 要么 ... 要么。
Dilu: 对。要么 A 要么 B。
John: So they're either doing this, or they're doing that. You can use this to describe what people are always doing, A or B. You can also use it to give someone a command - would you do this or do that.

Dilu: 忘了放回去。忘了放回去。
John: We know that 放 means 'to put', 'to place', but if we put 回去 after it, it means 'put it back'.
Dilu: 是的。放回去。放回去。
John: Can we just say 放回 for 'put it back'?
Dilu: 有点奇怪。经常会说:放回去。
John: So it sounds more complete to say 放回去。Put it back.
Dilu: 对。
John: Then the girl continues.
Dilu: 真受不了这些人。真受不了这些人。

John: Not a hall, because its an open space, its a gym, its a walkway.
Dilu: 对。就是可以走了地方。
John: So now we know that she tripped on a 哑铃 which was left on the 过道。So what does he say?
Dilu: 肯定是有人练完了,忘了放回去。
John: 肯定 ... what?
Dilu: 肯定是有人练完了。有人练完了。
John: 练,4th tone, means 'to exercise'.
Dilu: 对。就是:锻炼。
John: So they finished using the dumbbell, and then they ...

Dilu: That's right.
John: Put the book on the table. In this case, put what where?
Dilu: 哑铃。哑铃。第三声和第二声。
John: 哑铃 is 'dumbbell'.
Dilu: 你在健身房到处都是哑铃。
John: And literally it means 'dumb bell'. 哑铃。
Dilu: 对。
John: So you put the dumbbell where?
Dilu: 放在过道上。过道上。
John: 过道,two 4th tones, that means a 'walkway'.
Dilu: 是的。
Right-Wingnut
July 19, 2013 at 06:49 AM

John: And what do they do?
Dilu: 把哑铃放在过道上。把哑铃放在过道上。
John: First of all we have this pattern using 把。
Dilu: 对。
John: You take something and you do something with it.
Dilu: 把什么放在哪里。
John: Using it to place something somewhere is one of the first uses that you can use to get used to using 把。For example, 把书放在桌子上。

July 19, 2013 at 06:45 AM

Dilu: 对。但是没有这么严重。如果你把香蕉皮扔在地上,就是缺德。但是如果你杀了人,那就不是缺德的事情了。
John: So you throw a banana peel on the ground, that counts as 缺德,but killing someone is a bit beyond the scope of 缺德。
Dilu: 那当然啦。
John: 缺德 - that's 1st tone, 2nd tone.
Dilu: 对。第一声和第二声。缺德。谁啊?这么缺德。
Right-Wingnut
July 19, 2013 at 06:37 AM
1:28
John: So it sounds like the girl kicked something and hurt her foot maybe.
Dilu: 然后她说:谁啊?这么缺德。谁啊?这么缺德。
John: So why does she start off with 谁啊?
Dilu: 着句话的意思就是:谁?这么缺德。
John: Who could be so 缺德。So what does 缺德 mean exactly?
Dilu: 缺德就是说:做不好的事情。不负责人。
John: So you do that stuff, you're responsible. Literally 缺德 means 'lacking morality'.
