John: Today's lesson, its medical related. What is the key word?

Dilu: 今天的 key word 是骨折。骨折。

John: 骨折 literally means 'bone breaks'.

Dilu: 对。骨折。第三声和第二声。

John: And today's lesson, it actually takes place at a hospital. Someone is trying to figure out if they actually broke a bone, or why it hurts so much.

John: So what's the deal with this girl?

Dilu: 我早上摔了一跤，脚很痛。

John: 摔了一跤。This is 跤, not 脚。

Dilu: 是第一声。摔跤，两个第一声。那你可以说：摔了一跤。摔了一跤。

John: 摔跤 - two 1st tones - that means 'to trip', 'to slip and fall'.

John: So 摔了一跤 means 'tripped and took a fall'.

Dilu: 就是 had a fall.

John: OK.

Dilu: 她说她脚很痛。脚很痛。

John: 痛，4th tone. Her foot really hurts.

Dilu: 那这个男医生看了一看。他说：有点儿肿。有点儿肿。

John: 肿, 3rd tone, that means 'swollen'.

Dilu: 对。第三声。肿。什么时候摔的？什么时候摔的？

John: Now what he's asking is 'when did you fall?'. 'When did you hurt yourself？'

Dilu: 是在问时间。这里有一个 是...的 pattern。

John: We see the 的 at the end of the sentence, but the 是 is omitted. If the 是 was in there and we had a very full sentence, what would it be?

Dilu: 你是什么时候摔的？你是什么时候摔的？

John: So he's asking a specific question about the past. 'When did you trip and fall?' That's why we use the 是...的 - trying to get at that specific information.

John: Here we have a 了 at the end, so its been about 3 hours.

Dilu: 是的。到现在差不多。已经三个小时了。

John: So that 了 tells us that its up until now, the time is still continuing. So 'its been about 3 hours'.

Dilu: 然后这个医生他说：我捏一下。我捏一下。

John: 捏, 1st tone, doesn't that mean 'pinch'?

John: Squeeze with your whole hand.

Dilu: 对。

John: Anyway, he's applying pressure. So 捏 can be as small as a pinch, or as big as a squeeze (of) someone's whole foot with your hand.
