Need help with pinyin for the Passover 4 questions

Here is the Passover 4 questions in the book "300 Ways to Ask the 4 Questions". The main reason I got it was to get it in Chinese. Unfortunately, though it has the characters they used a loose transliteration instead of using pinyin.

If anyone could help me break it down into proper pinyin I would be very greatful. I photocopied it so it would lie flat and then scanned it. I can try scanning it directly from the book if this isn't clear enough. Anyway, I have attached it as a file below or at least attempted to (1st time I am trying the attachment option). ; )

Hi Meir,

What happened to the replies I posted to you? I'm wondering if you have reposted your initial post thus wiping out my replies.

Secondly, I have just tried to open the pdf you have attached but it won't open for me.

反正,luckily I managed to retrieve them:

I'd be happy to try and help if you could post a picture of the characters.

This site has the pinyin for the introductory question:

http://www.angelfire.com/pa2/passover/faq/four-questions.html

...which it gives as:

Chinese: Wei Shenmer Zher gar Yewan yu: chi: ta yewan bu: tong?

...but I think the pinyin is slightly erroneous. I would render it as:

Weishenme zhege yewan yu qita yewan butong

..in Characters that is:

为什么这个夜晚与其他夜晚不同?

meir mate, I hope that helps. If you need help with translation, or want to post a picture of the 4 questions in Chinese from your book, or need help with anything else, don't hesitate to ask. שָׁלוֹם

Thanks so much Bababardwan. Sorry I missed your reply. I am not living in China (though I wish I was!). I will try to upload a picture of the page from the book and perhaps that will help. I saw yet another version and wound up using that since it had pinyin as well (the book one is just a loose transliteration).

Bababardwan,

Sorry to do a new post but the reason I did is for some strange reason it doesn't seem to allow me to put an attachment in a reply , only in a new thread.

I am able to open up the pdf if I use Adobe Reader. Are you using a different PDF reader by any chance?

Also, thanks Mikeinewshot, that is what I was trying to do, get the pinyin for the page I posted. Were you able to open the pdf?

I don't see any way to put an attachment in an ongoing thread so I am afraid that to post it again I will have to open yet another thread. I will just call it Need help with the Pinyin with the Passover 4 questions part 2. If it lets me I will put in both the original text and the transliteration they have on a separate page. Instead of photocopying I will do this one straight from the book and you will see why it was so hard for a beginner like me to read. : (

Did you see my part 2 , Mike and the transliteration? With an attempt to upload a clearer copy does it still match your pinyin that you posted?

Profile picture
mikeinewshot

Sorry I don't know what you mean by 'part 2'. My pinyin matches what I can see in the pdf above.

Profile picture
mikeinewshot

Sorry, actually there are a couple of slight discrepancies. I have written ' huò zhe' sometimes instead of ' huò' - both mean 'or'. So if you match character by character you will see where I have put in an extra 'zhe' or two

I have now seen your other post and your second part with so called pinyin. The pinyin is simply wrong. It is written by someone who does not know pinyin properly.

Perhaps they were trying to make it accessible to people who don't know pinyin. The slight issue with pinyin for English speakers is that if you don't know otherwise you will pronounce some of it wrongly as you will make wrong assumptions

Yes, that was the problem Mike . It isn't really pinyin so it was useless to me. I can understand if they want to make a language like Chinese accessible to people who have never learned anything about it but the book would have been much better if they had put real pinyin in and then below that, perhaps put in a loose transliteration.
