Negating 以为 ?

Can 以为 be negated with 不?

If so, does 不以为 emphasize that you were not under that impression, or that the impression you were under was not misguided?

Hi bonscott, we don't use 不以为. 不认为 is correct. Usually we use 以为...不... to express negative, like 我以为你不会去.

Interestingly, we do have a 成语 can work in your way but you have to add 然 at the end. 不以为然 means to not agree or negative, like 我们都想加薪,但老板不以为然/ We all wanted a raise, but our boss didn't care about it.

Thanks David. I hadn't noticed that my question had been answered until this thread was brought to the top by the post at the bottom of the page. (Make sure you look at it - but not sure why he hijacked this thread)

Is there a reason why Chinese Pod staff are answering all other questions while neglecting mine?

I'll get the Elves to try and answer this question.  It's a good one. It's kind of like a double negative.  I'll get in touch with a better answer.

Technically it's not wrong, but just that it's not commonly used.  A more typical way would be to say 不认为「不認為」Bù rènwéi (I don't think so).

I'll ask @DavidXu what he thinks when he gets back from vacation.

Hi guys, I'd like to ask the difference between zhifu and fu (pay) and how they are used in different contexts. More specifically, I'd like to know how separate verbs are used and whether all verbs can be separated or not.

Hi yeongmingwon, 支付 and 付 have the same meaning. 支付 is more formal than the other one.
