how do you use 经常and 常常?

February 23, 2008, 04:55 PM posted in General DiscussionSo I woke up with Jīngcháng 经常 in my head this morning...I dont even remember where I learned it. So I looked it up and saw that it means “often.” But of course there was another word right next to it chángcháng 常常. Can anybody help me out with these words?? Do they mean the same thing and how would I use them in a typical sentence?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

February 24, 2008, 02:01 AMAdam, In this lesson, Jenny briefly touches on the use of 经常 and 常常, saying they're interchangeable. Here's a sentence from that lesson: 我们最近经常在一起。 Wǒmen zuìjìn jīngcháng zài yīqǐ. Lately we're often together. I always thought that when you double-up on a word (常常), that it just made it more casual...but don't take my word on that because I'm not positive.

February 24, 2008, 04:55 AMCalkins, In my opinion, you are right, when you double-up on a word, it made is more casual and more vivid. give you another example: 请打开门 pls open the door.=请开开门 打开=开开 打开电视（开关，按钮）=开开电视 我经常想起妈妈的话=我常常想起妈妈的话

From my guts feeling (Intermediate learner only) 经常 is a bit more colloquial, common and used for everyday situations, while 常常 has a touch more formality. Google: 经常 128 Mio hits 常常 69 Mio hits
