to do 'zuo4' vs 'gan4'

More of a confirmation question, because I have a vague idea...but can someone confirm the difference betwwen 'zuo4' and 'gan4'. My understanding is zuo4 is to do (for a longtime - like a profession or lifelong goal) and gan4 is to do (now - like an activity). Any thoughts?
