August 13, 2008, 02:40 PMChinese without tones: I once got a Berlitz Mandarin Chinese phrasebook, shrink-wrapped, alas. Got home, tore open the "no refund after opening" plastic, and discovered it had no tones. Couldn't believe it. A pity - the vocab lists and structure are great. It's really well-designed, but for the absence of, oh, one of those minor aspects of Chinese pronunciation...
Maybe I should make my students in Taiwan watch this Today Show clip. They don't have a clue about pinyin.
