Chinese shoe sizes

Does anyone know if the way Chinese shoe sizes are calibrated varies from place to place? I have shoes I've bought in Chengdu and Hainan which are size 240, but my Chinese teacher (a Beijinger) says she's never heard of a three digit system and seems to know what sounds like the European system of two digits.

Apologies for the trivial question but it might save me some blank stares next time I'm buying shoes in Beijing. :-)

Think the three digit size is based on mm. The Euro double digit type seems most common.
