~ I am planning on taking my Drivers Ed. Permit test the end of this month in Mandarin Chinese. I obviously need to learn the vocabulary, so does any one here have any links to websites that would be help and have a lot of "driving" vocabulary? I need to understand how to say/read/write words like: sign, street, car, pedestrian, railroad, stop, go, slow, intersection, and so on. Also, does anyone know if the Driver's Permit Test would be in Pinyin or characters? Do you think you could chose?(It would be a lot easier for me if it was in pinyin that way I would have less to learn in a month.) Thank you all very much! Xiexie, zai jian. . .

italiana,
do not despair. Build up your language capabilities for about 1 or 2 years, practice Madarin traffic vocab, get some driving experience and then reapproach your project.
In China.

June 12, 2007 at 10:45 AMOk I called and they will not let me take the test in Mandarin because they said not enough people speak the language. I dont get that. . .I thought Mandarin was the #1 most spoken language in the world? They have the test in English and Spanish, the 3rd and 4th most spoken but not in the 1st most spoken. . . . .即哑. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

June 11, 2007 at 10:20 AMWell, Im a little stressed now but I think I have an idea if they dont have the test in Mandarin. Maybe I could take it in English (and pass of course!) and then take i again but in Mandarin. Then that way they would know that I know the english terms and words but I would also know them in Chinese. What do you think?? ~Italiana

Well, it was not my intention to demotivate you.
In fact I actually think you are doing a very interesting experiment there that I can only encourage you to do (albeit a month is really tight if you are still at an early level).
I bet the community will support you with all your language questions. And you will probably come back with a detailed learning report later. Best approach would be to intensively utilize the Forum.

I have never seen any Pinyin in any Chinese texts besides small kids books (with the intention to teach the kids those strange Roman characters - not the other way round).

I took my driving exam during a student exchange in the US in the year of 1988. After I pointed out to the instructor that my English might be not so well the driving instructor explained to me: "Even if you came from Mars you would need to do it completely in English."
From that I concluded it is English-only - and taking into account that the US traffic signs are not the international (symbol based) ones and have text on them.
By the way: Those days the US driving licence was still accepted in Germany as a valid certification that could be switched to a German licence. Those days are gone. They noticed that the US licence is several magnitudes easier compared to the German one.

June 11, 2007 at 09:07 AMIm going to call and order a book in Mandarin too. I have one already in English, so that should help me a bit too. The only thing is Im not so good in memorizing the Hanzi characters so....I really hope its in Pinyin or Google Translater is going to be seeing a lot of me, lol. ~italiana

you make me curious: You can take your driving exam in Mandarin in the US?
---------------
I don't see why not either. You can do a LOT of things in the USA, thankfuly. You can take it in Spanish so why not Mandarin -- the #1 most spoken language in the world??

June 11, 2007 at 08:41 AMHello~ I know Im not advanced (as you can see from all my quesitions), nut I am going to do it anyways. I can always retry, right? Of course I wouldn't want to take it over again. Im guessing that the test will probably be in Hanzi right? (darn it!) Well, thank you for your help. Xiexie, ~Italiana

Hi Italiana,
taking a driver's permit test in Mandarin sounds both brave and advanced...
If you google for "驾驶执照" and "vocabulary" you get a few hits. This one looks quite interesting, although it is of Taiwan origin and therefore in traditional Hanzi only.
I would also recommend that you try to place your question in the CPod-Forum, there are quite a few native speaers there who are always very helpful.
