Not a surprise....one of the greatest martial arts films ever.  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

I remember seeing this in 2000, at the IMAX theatre...WOW!

calkins,

I'm so honoured you've joined the group! While not a surprise re movie,I completely agree that it's one of the greatest martial arts films ever.I rarely buy movies ,but of the handful of movies I do own this is one of them which should tell you how highly I also regard this one.I saw it on the big screen too when it came out ,but it was not an imax unfortunately which would have been even better. Thanks heaps for the clip which really enriches this sort of discussion. When I first saw you'd added a clip of this movie I immediately thought of the scene where they were balancing on the branches [but I see now that perhaps the greenery above would make one think of that ].This was one of my favourite scenes. Some of my mates didn't go so much for the stuff they saw as unrealistic like running up walls and the above scene, but I loved it for what it was ;pure escapism and gave one a chance to dream.Yeah ,awesome movie;thanks again.

great clip (as well one of the rare movies I have as original DVD...)

Maybe one day I can visit the village with the moon lake you see in this clip...

One more great fight scene, this one between Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh...

...and some interesting Mandarin-related trivia about the movie, from IMBD:

"Crouching tiger hidden dragon" is a quote from Chinese mythology. It refers to hiding your strength from others; advice which is followed too well by the characters in the film.

Michelle Yeoh did not speak Mandarin, and the script was presented to her phonetically with help from Mandarin-speaking crew members - her Malaysian accent can be heard throughout. Yun-Fat Chow did speak Mandarin (his first language is Cantonese) but native Mandarin speakers thought his accent strained and overdone.

Ziyi Zhang studied calligraphy for several months along with her other training for the movie.

I especially liked the part when she grabbed the halbert and couldn´t lift it up ;-)

excuter, I agree.  Classic martial arts film comedy!  The look on Zhang Ziyi's face was classic too.
