This expression is typical of the chinese thinking but has different interpretations :

Literally:

The heart is separate from the belly

In the ABC dictionary :

人心隔肚皮 (rénxīn gé dùpí) People should always be on guard against one another.

In wiktionary :

  1. keep one's thoughts to oneself
  2. keep one's thoughts close to one's breast
  3. to not reveal what one is thinking
