Is this still in the works?  The url no longer has a place-holder but is instead just blank.  Is Praxis still planning on creating German podcasts?

Joachim,

My daughter who was studying German was given the first part of your advice by someone;don't bother as they all speak English.I think this took the wind out of her sails. As for the second part,I realise that there are many Germans like yourself on the site here, but I was still surprised that you are suggesting many[?a majority] speak Mandarin. What percentage do you reckon and to what degree of proficiency?

其实,我正在学习德语,而且我很喜欢学习德语。不过我觉得,在网上能很开心地学习德语的地方还很少。我个人非常喜欢Praxis公司的method,真渴望着你们早日开始做GermanPod!

babardwan:

My comment was meant to be ironic. I apologize if that wasn't obvious enough.

1. Most Germans have been exposed to English, many have endured it at school - it is compulsory. Basic communication will almost always be possible in English with Germans. The level of competence in English of German taxi drivers is pretty much on par with their Chinese colleagues or only slightly better. I reckon that more advanced exchange of ideas in English will be difficult with many speakers of the German language (including Austrians and German-speaking Swiss).

2. The sheer number of people learning Chinese in Germany is increasing, but you'll rarely encounter someone who will understand "Ni hao".

Your daugther should definitely continue to learn German! It's a plus if she is into engineering, classical music, maths, philosophy and many other vocations.

It's not as charming as French or Italian, but it's easier than Russian, Greek and Icelandic. ;-)
