上 vs. 来?

I tried to do some research (i.e. google a rough rendition of the phrases I want to express in Chinese :P ) on compliments, but in the end, I got distracted by something else: 上/来.

For example, sometimes it's "上[place]", sometimes "来[place]". What's the difference? Could someone provide me with a couple of example sentences for each verb?
