June 14, 2009, 03:30 AM posted in General DiscussionHello everybody,
after working here in Tibet this summer I will have some holidays in Chengdu and Hong Kong from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10. Thanks to light and miantiao I already have tips for accomodation in Chengdu.
A friend in HK tried to get a room for me on the university campus but she ha some problems with that and the one she can offer me is quite expensive (500HKD/D).
I found lots of hostels in the internet, but it is hard to decide how the place will look like from the small pictures.
Also i thought I first ask here before I check every adress in the online city map (very slow internet up here in Tibets mountains ;-)).
I am looking for a not too expensive hostel with single rooms and it would be great to get one close to Hong Kong University HKU, as I will have several appointments on campus during this week...
Tips anyone???
Thanks, Gesa

June 14, 2009, 10:35 AMHi Gesa,
Try Star Guest House. Small rooms (very small) but clean and the staff have been really friendly to me. It is in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. Sorry, it's not near HK University, but the public transport in HK is so easy.
HK$300 to $400 and I think there might be a 15% discount at the moment.

But also try the discount accomodation web sites. Traffic is proably down in HK due to Swine Flu and the economic crisis, and if there is not much happening in HK (like trade fairs), ou can get good discounts at grander hotels.

One place to look for on the discount sites is 'Mingle Place on the Wing', which is on Hong Kong Island and so nearer the uni. I think I have seen single rooms for $400.

June 14, 2009, 03:18 PMThere are two hotels in Sai Ying Pun, pretty close to HKU, one is Costco hotel and the other is Hotel Jen ... both seem to fill up pretty fast so you will want to book as much in advance as possible:

Hotel Jen: http://www.hoteljen.com/

June 14, 2009, 03:29 PMHK200/night is the most I would pay for a hostel in Hong Kong, (single room with shared washroom) but I never look for the high end places. There are tons of hostels on Nathan Rd and I like the central location. I stayed at one of the guest houses in Mirador Mansions last time. And yeah, the room will not be much wider than the bed.
(I never follow the touts who approach you on the street offering very low priced rooms though. It just gives me the creeps.)
To get a better price, you go later in the day and never, ever accept the asking price. It's easy to get to nearly anywhere in Hong Kong via the mtr.

June 14, 2009, 06:35 AMOne place I can recommend is the Alisan guest House. It is not close to the university, but it would at least be a start, right? Give you a chance to take your bearings etc.
Accommodation is very expensive in HK. It's a different kettle of fish to the mainland, (you'll find that out for yourself.) But the Alisan prices are quite reasonable and the proprietor is a decent guy.
