More on the Most Active User Algorithm
John
July 17, 2007, 03:28 PM posted in General DiscussionIn case you missed it, the current algorithm (slightly restated to be easier to understand) is:
[Your total lesson comments (including Extra)] + [Your total new posts + Comments left on your new posts + Your total comments on others' new posts]
The above only refers to activity in the past 7 days.
I'm just curious if anyone has any other thoughts on it.
We could, for example, add in number of times a user has been added to others' watchlists, but that gives admins an unfair advantage (and I, for one, am totally against such evil manipulation of Most Active User totals), or it might lead to people changing their Watchlists to affect Most Active User ranks, and that's kind of dumb.
Thoughts?

July 17, 2007, 04:13 PMWould it be possible to also count consecutive posts by the same person as one? So if you post say 5 comments in a row in one topic it only counts as one.

July 17, 2007, 05:08 PMI fear there is a slight risk of false incentives here. E.g. I got the slight impression of a dilution of the information density in Lantians posts. I am convinced that you need valuation to measure value.

July 18, 2007, 12:17 AMYeah. How 'bout a word count, with big words counting more? Otherwise, some people might just have their helper monkeys stay up all night for their 15 minutes of fame.
