Confusing 的 with 得... HELP!

October 09, 2009, 08:51 AM posted in General DiscussionHi!
I'm studying first year Mandarin at uni and I find I'm always confusing the grammar particle 'de' 得 with the subordinating particle 'de' 的 when I try to construct sentences.
Does anyone have any hard and fast rules I could follow to pick the right one? Or is it really a matter of remembering each situation?
谢谢你!

October 09, 2009, 09:10 AMhi murray,
i'll have a crack. 的 means belongs to, indicating possession. 我的、你的、地球的。 it is also added to the end of adjectives- don't ask me why. 共产的、腐败的、恶劣的、不人道的。
得 on the other hand is added to verbs and followed by an adjective to qualify the verb. 说得好、表现得很精彩、打得不错、走得快。it is also used with another verb 吃得下、赶得上。
hope this helps.
