呢 not always a question?!

December 03, 2009, 04:23 AM posted in General DiscussionI was hoping someone could give me a few tips or examples on how to use 呢 when it's not a question particle, such as in 还没呢。 or (别麻烦他。) 他没吃饭呢。
What situations do you use this form of 呢 in?
谢谢!

December 03, 2009, 04:47 AMThe 呢 in your examples above basically add emphasis. Without the 呢, the sentences sound neutral, as if just stating facts.

December 03, 2009, 04:58 AM谢谢 小Phil.
I guess that leads me to the question of what kind of emphasis it adds to those sentences?

December 03, 2009, 05:14 AMActually, I think it is more like giving life/feeling to a sentence. To me, 呢 adds a hint of exasperation or whining.
For example:
Q: Have you eaten? A: 没有. (no, feeling here. just telling you the answer.)
Q: Are you ready to go YET? A: 我还没吃饭呢!(Come on, I haven't even eaten yet!)
I'm an amateur, though. I would say I am about 75% confident in my answers.

December 03, 2009, 11:42 AM我在吃饭呢. = I am eating. 我在吃饭 is also ok。
with 呢 make you seem to be more friendly to others, however,if you dont use 呢 will also make sense.so 呢 is commonly used between intimate and relatives, dudes that you are not quite familar with often omit 呢
sometimes people say it in a faster speed that the sound of "呢" can hardly be heard

December 15, 2009, 09:10 AMIt is usually used to describe a state.Such as 我在上班呢;我在玩呢;我最近在炒股呢;我现在考研呢。The state may remain for long or short. So you can use it very commonly without too much limitation.

December 03, 2009, 04:45 AM我在吃饭呢. = I am eating. Basically, it is used to indicate an action you are currently doing, i.e. the present continuous, basically.
