Hi everyone! Ready for another recitation of a common children's poem by Ahma? Once again, press pause after hearing me say "what does that mean?" and see if you can understand her. It's a good one!

Your little video clips are just lovely! All languages have poems and rhymes for children and it's so much fun to hear the Chinese ones in this way. Keep them coming!

Thanks, AZERDocMom. Ahma's a gem. I think I've got it Henning: 小老鼠上登台 Xiǎo lǎoshǔ shàng dēngtái The little mouse climbed the oil lamp 头遇之下不来 tóu yù zhī xià bù lái when he reached it, he couldn't get down 叫妈妈, 妈妈不睬 jiào māma, māma bù cǎi he called for his mama, but mama ignored him 叽里咕噜滚下来。 jīligūlū gǔn xialai. and he came rumbling-tumbling down.

Xiaodai "头遇之下不来 tóu yù zhī xià bù lái when he reached it, he couldn't get down" This part is incorrect. It's "tou1 you2 chi1" 偷油吃 下不来 Stole the oil to eat, then could not get down。

Thanks. I wondered about that. I thought I heard "chi" not "zhi", but I also thought I heard "yu" (reach) not "you" (oil).

Xiaodai, you heard "chi" correctly. Ahma has a slight Taiwanese slant to her Mandarin since that is her 老家; perhaps that's where "yu" and "you" was misperceived. "zhi" "chi" "shi" are difficult to hear and produce for the non-native speaker; the differences are really, really minute; you had a post on it recently and reflected again your great understanding of the language.
